Report:Took off at about 9am from our base in Portlaoise. Headed to Killiney for a few hours fisin’. It was amazing weather for the last day of the year. The temperature was showing 12 degrees. When we arrived, there was very little wind about. We set up using frozen, mac, sand eel and quid.
Al was the first to wet his line. I geared up, swung back and bang, break-off. Ok it happens. So quickly rigged up again and began my wind up. Just as the rod came over my right shoulder, bang. The leader with its two hooks and weight fell behind me. Something wrong here methinks. Bad line, knots not tied properly? Checked all that again. Tried to cast again just with the weight on. Snap. The line went again. Al said that maybe the line was getting torn between the eyes. Clare to God the plastic on the inside of the top tip was gone and the steel eye was shearing the line. A bit of improvising and I was back in action.
Al was first to hook up with a small whiting. About noon, I hook into a small one as well. Nice to finish the year without a blank. Looking forward to getting out again in coming weeks, with my rod dickeyed up.
One more cast and I'll be off
