wexford 16th and 17th dec

#1 Post by corbyeire »

People: shamoo and me and FMD

Duration: 7-11pm 16th, 11-2pm and 6-10pm 17th

Tide: filling to high in evening

Weather: freezing and rain 16th, cold but clear 17th

Bait: lug, crab, razor, sandeel, mac, squid

Rigs: pulleys and flappers

Results: mixed, see below

Report: Shamoo had been talking about a session for a good few months so it finally came the weekend just gone - all sorts of baits and fishing had been discussed - what location tides etc.etc.
the texts the calls, the mails the pms

we had done the talking it was time to get to the fishing - he was thinking big cod and i was thinking lazy!
there was no way i was going over to youghal after work on a friday so an estury closer to wexford was chosen

we had just set up and another chap arrived after us. the decision to throw out a few baits first and then stick on the gear was a bad idea - my hands were numbe when i was trying to get the waders onto me!

the other chap out of the back of his jeep was into a double first cast - and pretty much stayed at that for 2 hours - think i only saw him with 2 blank casts the whole night

mark was soon into fish - pulling a coalie 40cm and a big fat belly on him and a rockling, he then had another 4 large coalies and a whiting over 35cm as well as loads of smaller whiting and coalies, rockling - i think he may have had some tiddler codling aswell

i was blanking, and as the man to my left kept puling in doubles and trebles i was wondering what i was doing wrong - again

anyways after about 1.5hrs my rod shook and i brough in a surprise of a dab 28cm - followed by another 26cm a few casts later

as the water neared the top of the tied the other chap backed up and went - the fishing slowed for mark at this point also and i went back to blanking

had a rockling on last cast and then called it a day - back to the town for few late pints

up bright and early saturday morning and to a nearby beach for some easy fishing FMD joined us and the sun was shinning without a puff of wind in the air

our first choice was full of weed but we moved to the north which was weed free - or at least we thought it was

after about 30mins it started to plague shamoo, then i picket up some bits the it was all over
a blank for all 3 of us but we cut it short knowing we would go out later

headed to the same estury as the night before but further inland - we had a few casts but the current was way to strong - chucking 7oz back into the bank in seconds - there were 2 other souls that were going to stick it out but we packed up and went back to the scene of the crime of the night before

straight off i had a decent coalie 38 with a codling 27
had fish on for my first few casts - got a few whiting and rockling thrown in

then on my bigger bait pulley i pulled in a flounder a
shamoo was not having as much fun as the night before but was focussed more on bigger baits for an elusive larger cod

unfortunately it didnt happen but the session was a bit better for me than the night before in terms of numbers

we packed it in and headed back once again for some late pints and even later drunken telly watching

got up and pretty much stayed in the pub for the day watching footie yesterday in nice comfy weather conditions

all in all a good weekend

Well done Brain, Mark and co.
Good report.
Sounds like a you pulled out all the stops with all of the venues visited and resulted in Fish in most cases, so not too bad in my book.
A couple more venues also visited to discuss tactics for the alusive COD over a beer of course :) how bad, sounds like a good weekend alright.

Good going lads and of course FMD :D Wouldn't mind some plus-35cm coalie action over Christmas myself. Hard luck on the Codling.
It ain't easy but it sure is simple!

thanks lads - should have said thanks to joe for giving me the nod that all the south facing beaches were full of weed

saved me a tour round that part of the county, making the decision to head back to an estury much better!

1st time out since the summer, nice to get a few fish even if the bigger ones evaded us.

Pints are a lot cheaper in Wexford than Dublin, so that was a bonus :D

Thanks for the hospitality Brian
