Kids Rod and reel combo recommendations

At the suggestion of various members and given the magazines will run a mile from criticising a piece of kit, here is your chance to tell us what you really think about a rod, reel, line, lure... keep it legal please!

shakespeare firebird is a great wee rod and reel combo, i had one when i was young and they are still making them
i got a set out of belfast angling centre last year for £20 for my wee nephew (5), they are cheap enough but still good quality for the price

i wouldn't be a fan of the combo packs at all got one during the summer and it just felt cheap and nasty .the rod was ok but the real was shocking. Ended up getting a seven foot spinnin rod and Shimano reel in mullingar for 48 for the two and got the line free . For the few extra bob it means i have a nice wee trout rod if she doesn't take it up .

decide on the kind of fishing ye will be doing and how much you want to spend. if its just for beach work a bass rod would be perfect as it will be nice and light and wont be too powerfull for him. couple it to a smallish fixed spool and he should be fine.
pop into dan in the halfway and he should look after you.

The combo set I had was a small Michelle rod and reel but it was a trout set up and to be honest I don't see myself going back trout fishing in the near future .Im not looking to spend alot on it maybe 60 bucks at the most so a light bass rod would be perfect.Ill drop in to Dan and see what he has to say.

Something like this would be perfect.
