distance wise, otg v pendalum

#1 Post by dondu »

All other things being equal will either of these styles outcast the other ?
When it comes to tournament casting I've only ever cast otg but would it be worth trying to learn pendalum to increase distance .

the pendulum generally goes a bit further but not much

perfectly executed, OTG goes nearly as far

it also depends on the caster

some are OTG specialists but generally they'll also know all the other styles

anybody interested in competing in tournament casting should learn the pendulum though

at all the main tournament events, everyone casts pendulum

the more you know the better all round performer you'll be

but not just for tmt casting, its not always possible to OTG in fishing situations
only reel men cast!

If you learn both to their full potential there's nothing in it. Most reasonably competent casters will usually cast further with their pendulum, but thats usually because, as Scannerman said already 95% of the tournament boys use pendulum.
Big jamie blakeman from England had top 3 finishes at the UKSF this year using only OTG and has cast over 260metres at competition there.
If you get down to Sportscast Ireland there's a chance you could pick up a few tips that will improve your OTG.
With regards to fishing you won't always be able to do an OTG so if you have a fairly decent pendulum cast it's another string in your bow.

Thanks for your earlier answer. Living in Kerry long distance casting for fishing is not usually needed but handy sometimes on Inch or the Brandon beaches.By the way are you related to Phil McCrackin ?

Regarding tournament casting ,I used to have access to a sports field with nice short grass for practising my otg casting, but since moving to Kerry and catching the casting bug again ,the only fields around for practising are a little rough.I've tried laying polythene on the ground but the lead still catches.
A full pendulum looks hard to master and to me, looks over complicated .I've been trying something like what Danny Moeskops does(but half the distance) but I'm so rusty my timings way out. Practise,Practise ,Practise.

thanks for your replies

my best cast is with an otg, and i find if you practise enough and get the hit good with the otg it will help alot with your pendulum, as steve said its hard to do the otg of the beach fishing, but guys have been known to use 4 inch waste pipe cut in half on the beach for the otg
