Arklow beach/pier 3/11/11

#1 Post by sparkey+1 »

People:Me and Creep

Duration:3.5 hours

Tide:Ht at 14.00

Weather:Dry and gale force wind

Bait:Lug,Crab,Squid and Razor

Rigs:3 and 2 hook flappers, 1 up 1 down

Results:Me Flounder Dab and Whitings
Creep 5 bearded rockling, Plaice and Whitings

Report:1 st report lads... Got to the mark at just after HW ( not that you would know well that's Arklow ) and set up on the beach only to find that even a 5oz gripper wont hold bottom and the surf was breaking at about 7/8 ft high in front of us and the wind was howling down the beach.

We decided to move mark and went into the harbor for some shelter so Creep got set up down at the railing at the end of the pier and me slightly up from him. The very heavy swell was breaking onto the pier and around our feet trying to take our bait wraps and haversacks back out with it. Then the first very big wave hit the back of the pier and broke over the wall landing on top of Creep, to say I had a big chuckle at that well has to be done.!!

I move up to a spot that I taught looked where no water was breaking over the back of the wall!!!! what a mistake my turn for a soaking... and a few more soaking we had for the session....

Creep was 1st into the fish with a pin whiting in perfect condition so his blank saved. I was in next into the fish with a very nice flounder pan size but back he went so my blank saved then I had a double up with a pin whiting and a dab followed by whiting after whiting. Creep got a fish of his spices list a nice 5 bearded rockling so he did a jig on the pier maybe to get the water of himself.

On one of the last cast Creep pulled in a nice place on the flapper on lug that we got off "Tightlines" cheers Alan.

It was getting dark and the sea had started to change direction and come straight onto the pier so we made to call to call it an night not that we wanted to but the conditions got to dangerous to fish safely....

A nice short session had by the two of us.

Tightlines

Dave

Apart from the catching the crack was great, at one point Sparkey said "Its dry here, look no water", and he had a smug look on his face  hehehe just as he said it I heard the thunder roll of the wave on the other side and down came a wall of water on top of him!! Perfect timing!!to say I laughed understatement, But heres the thing about fishing these conditions Safety first, I know that mark well also i was up with the railings should anything go pear shaped also I was wearing (as always) a flotation suite the currents around Arklow are dangerous as they have a great push particular around the Harbour, boats know this and hence sadly cant change direction quickly as they'd like, also the Harbour mouth is small, (which I'll never understand, they had room to open it a bit wider) speaking of which anyone knows what is going on with Greystones Harbour??? That used to be a great place until they decided to put up all that modren art work fencing all over the damn thing  (feel sorry for the people living there that have to look at it day in day out )
