Carraroe and Spiddal 16.10.11

#1 Post by sturmik »

People: Me and 2 friends

Duration: form 3 am to 11 am

Tide: HT at 8 am

Weather: windy with beautiful moon

Bait: Mack, garden worms

Rigs: Float, Pulley, feathers

Results: 5 pollocks and macks (me) and some macks (the rest of crew)

Report: I had a hope to catch some serious fish, anything except the macks (I have almost 400 in the freezer), the guys was hoping for macks ( empty freezers) ,so we decided to have mixed night/morning fishing.
At Carraroe (lighthouse) the famous rock was empty. We set up 6 rods (float and bottom) in every direction but up to the morning there was no single sign of any fish, just few crabs. After 8 am there was still no macks on feathers, I catch 5 pollocks (between 1 and 2 lbs). I got even treble on feathers  .I lost few nice fish as well (shallow water, rocks and feathers = lot of snags). Then we headed back to Spiddal to catch some macks (around 30-40 for the friends to make them happy ;) ).
Overall quite disappointing trip- I had hope for some sharks, rays ,wrasses and other night species.

BTW: Did you ever catch ballan wrasse with bare hands only?
During packing up in Carraroe, I spot this fish in narrow shelter contains some water in the rocks- fish had to stuck in this trap during some big waves in the evening. Ballan was around 1 lb ,so it swim safely to the ocean.
