New Zealand fishing info please

Heya im off on a working visa to auckland next month tempted to chuck a reel into the backpack.Just on the off chance anybody knows anything about what type of gear would be needed for beach/rock fishing r just general info about the species and angling over there!
ive researched a bit licensces are a must of course but would like to hear if anyone has experience of fishing in newzealand :D this is a bit of a shot in the dark id say :P worth a try
