New Fishing Quotas

#1 Post by flyno »

I've just been reading on bbc ni text that the new fishing quotas for 2012 includes a zero catch for cod and a big reduction for other white fish caught in the irish sea. As anglers it can only be good news, whats some of your views on this...

i think its great they are reducing it but at the end of the day the trawlers will scoop up and kill anything in its path , and the cod they are not allowed keep will be thrown back dead , just because of the quotas dosnt mean they gonna reduce the catch,,, they are still gonna net cod even if they dont want them,, there was a great programme on channel 4 about it recently, some celeb chef i think, anyways BRING BACK THE 40 MILE LIMIT, that the charley haughey the CNUT sold out on us in the 80s! ,,,,, in my opinion , quotas wont make any differance what so evr, when a net goes into the sea to trawl, it dosnt know about quotas... it scoops everything in its path and the skipper and crew decide what to keep

Just in relation to the above post about the celebrity chef doing a show about quotas and discards and all that. The above link will allow you to watch the series on "channel 4 on demand" for anyone that missed it. Well worth watching.

Fish Fight. net have a great thing going and need more people to sign up for it, the Quota system doesnt work 000's of tonnes of great fish are wasted throughout the Irish Sea , and people are confussing it with other issues of over fishing, Its not the Trawler lads who decided what to keep and throw out, as I know many of them that are disgusted with wasting fish as we are. Its some little politician in Brussels that has never been near a fish in his/her life that decideds these ridicilous quotas that tell experienced fishermen what they can and can not keep, a far better system would be to let the lads pull in what they can (with legal sized nets), combine with the 40 mile limit, and number the days they go out for each boat, that way crew and boat are still making money.
And this time with the presidental election coming up Im using this oppertunity to annoy every politician that comes knockin on my door I'm not letting them away with it!! Increased bills, property tax, water tax, ridicilous quotas systems, (i recently had one banging on the door telling me he was invloved with trimming trees in the local area!! PSML!! needless to say I launched at him, wasted tax payers money!!)

Ha politicians would say mass to get ya to vote for them! they`re all the same lying little toads with all the tax payers dosh in the back pocket. Hughs fish fight is a well worthy cause though, I watched the whole series and have been keeping an eye on its progress since. I think everyone on this site should sign up to it and support it. The more people signed up the more sway Hugh has to push the lying toads around in Brussels. The amount of wasted fish thrown back overboard is unreal, and how any tosser miles away from the sea in europe even has a say in the matter is beyond crazy. You want to have seen the size of some of the cod and coalfish the trawlers off scotland were dumping back dead into the sea it would make you sick and although I dont have much time for commercial fishermen they should be allowed to keep and sell and legally sized fish they catch at least the fish wouldnt have died for no reason.
