West cork beach- identify fish surfing?

I took 5 kids to a west cork beach yesterday and even managed to do some fishing whilst keeping a eye on them. Conditions were not great - low tide, calm and bright. However there was a bit of a surf at one end of the beach so I tried spinning a rubber sandeel more in hope than anything.
Nothing happened for a long time but then I spotted fish in the actual waves which were about 3-4 feet high, almost surfing in the wave tunnel just before it breaks.

They varied in size from 2-4 lb approx. and had a classic fish shape.I think they were bass or mullet. Do bass or mullet behave like this?

I tried castng over them and could do it ok but they did not seem interested. I only had 2 lures so I tried the second one and same story no interest. I gave up after a while but I am curious to know what they were. Also weed was a big problem so most casts got covered in some.

Can anyone tell me what they think the surfers are?

unlucky with the fishing and i would say the fish are bass it has being reported on here before
about bass crusing in the breakers and my mate was on brandon beach in kerry a few years back and saw the same thing sholes of bass in the first breaker but had no rod with him might be worth ago with some bait next time you are doing a session

we were in west cork beach as well couple of weeks back and seen same fish on shore..myself and mates cast the rod straight away hoping they're bass and besides it is our wish list to catch bass. same with you we have no joy..and we were told that they are not bass instead they are mullet and very hard to catch..

most probaly mullet,iv seen this on a few occations & it always seems to be mullet
you probaly do get the odd bass amongist them as well do

It could be either to tell the truth, no-one will know for definite as both fish can be seen cruising in the breakers but I would say they are more likely to be Mullet..................or bass

Just curious fella, what beach were u on? I am on barleycove at the moment and the place is alive with mullet, hundreds of them.

I would guess that they were Sea Trout, I have seen them do this at Barrow and Rossbeigh in Kerry , they just sit in the waves side on to the beach( all facing the same direction ) and let the wave fold over carrying them with it , just before the wave breaks they turn and swim back out to sea and do it again. On one occasion I had them up to around 6lb swimming round my tripod which was in about a foot of water.

Had this problem myself in Ardmore,Trout, Bass, Mullet???, Ill tell what they wer'nt, mackerel, ling,flounder, pollack, etc, that should narrow it down

same thing i saw a couple years ago down streedagh beach,i was thinkin it was a weeds but it coming back nd forth with the waves.surfer guys told me it was a fish nd it is a seatrout .

I`d go for mullet... Thick lipped and golden grey!!
Maybe with the odd bass

The fish that Jim saw recently in Ardmore were probably golden grey mullet. The beach was alive with them at times. You get millions of them on the Cunnigar. The water boils with them

i think you,s are all mad and so desperate to catch you are imagining seeing fish
seen it a few times you get a little glimps of em as the wave breaks ,but not long enough to make up your mind what they are most annoying,i have a theory that they are feeding on sand fleas washed out by the wave

Mullet - well, they can be a challenge al right
If you've had success with a baited spinner then please leave a comment. Tried a few 'top secrets' this year, unfortunately though, they turned out to be just another excuse for forced PE and as I've past my teenage years a fair while ago I'm not too fond of stamina enhancing drugs purely because of health reasons, obviously
