Very interesting, thanks for posting the link Gerry. I often wondered where they spawned, actually wondered if they spawned in freshwater at all cos their juveniles are everywhere in the estuaries and well into the river. Wonder why so many tiny flounder are to be seen scooting off infront of ye when wading estuary and lower river? Maybe they drift inshore following spawning and use the shore/estuary/river as nursery?

A great fish in its own right, always love catching a nice sized one, which isnt often and when I say nice sized, I'm still not talking about 2 to 3 lbers, thats mental the quality of fish they have there in Wexford, lovely stuff. Flatties in general are fascinating fish to pull in.

2013 Sea Species:- Bass, Flounder, 5 Beard Rockling, Shore Rockling, Whiting, red gurnard, grey gurnard, Pollack, coley, mackerel, sea trout, cant remember cos I didn't update at the time.....
2012 Sea species:- Pollack, Coley, Mackerel, Cod, Bass, Sea Trout, Haddock, Plaice, Dab, Flounder, Red Gurnard, Grey Gurnard, Pouting, Whiting, Corkwing Wrasse, Ballan Wrasse, Lesser Spotted Dogfish, Brown Trout caught on beach.
2011 Sea species:- codling, L.S. dogfish, coley, whiting, pollack(4lb 3oz), sea trout, shore conger eel (15lb), ballan wrasse, grey gurnard, plaice, dab (and lobster).

flounder can "hybridise with the plaice". wow, didnt know this!
that'll make some identifications that little bit more tricky... :D

its called Platichthys flesus in the article and Pleuronectes flesus in the species description page

think it is platichthys to be honest

or even leith as gaeilge :idea:

seen one caught in galway bay 51cm
