Garron Point, Co Antrim, 7th August 2011

#1 Post by nobuzz »

People: Just me (Daniel couldn't get out of bed)

Duration: 8:30 - 12:00

Tide: Low at 10:00ish

Weather: Lovely with a few showers just as I was leaving.

Bait: Rag & Blueys

Rigs: Float & Pulley

Results: 3 Doggies, 3 pollack, a pile of Ballen Wrasse & one Corkwing.

Report: Finally managed to get rag organised late in the week (thanks to Belfast angling Centre) and planned to head up to Garron point with Daniel for a go at the wrasse & pollack. 7:00 arrived. I dragged myself out of bed. Unfortunately I couldn't coax Daniel out of his so I decided to head off myself.

I got to Garron Point just before 8:30 and got set up with rag below a float on a size 4 hook and a 3/0 pulley loaded with Bluey to try for a doggie or hopefully a bigger pollack further out. First cast on the float got a nice pollack just over 1lb. Two more smaller pollack followed quickly after that, then it all went quiet. After a while the float started doing that dancey, bouncey thing typical of small wrasse having a go at the bait. I switched to a size 6 hook and started to hit maybe 1 in 5 bites. Two of the wrasse were a bit bigger at around a pound.

The 3 doggies all came on bluey fished at distance.

On the way home I stopped at a mark on the Larne side of Glenarm where I saw about 12 guys fishing. As I arrived I saw a nice rock codling being brought in (45cm ish). Turned out it was a club competition for the East Antrim Club. I've never fished that mark but I reckon it'd be worth a throw if you don't mind losing too many leads.
Species List 2012 (Me) - Lesser Spotted Dogfish, Plaice, Codling, pollack, dab, SS Scorpion Fish, Ballan Wrasse, Codling.

Nice bit of fishing there nobuzz, Garron Point always worth a go, doesnt always produce for me, I tend to spin at it, but its one of the places where if you do hit a pollack it can be a very good one, its getting them in over the kelp jungle is the problem.

Well done.

No problem getting the tiddlers I got on Sunday over the kelp. They kept well away from it incase something big fancied them for dinner! I had my spinning gear with me but was too busy watching a bobbling float to get it set up.

good to see you had a good day out alan :D . if the conditions are right, float fishing has got to be one of the most relaxing styles of fishing. sitting there in the sun watching the float gently bob up and down on calm water waiting for any abnormal twitches to indicate a fish having a go is pure class  . my ultimate defenition of summer 8) 8)
