Portaferry, Co Down, 03/08/11

#1 Post by Drew »

People: Rhys, Dan and Drew

Duration: 5pm - 7.30pm

Tide: Dropping

Weather: Spits of Rain, otherwise nice.

Bait: Ragworm, Lugworm, Mackeral

Rigs: Mini Basher, Flappers, Pulley

Results:

Codling, Whiting, Pollack, Coalfish, Ballan, GS, Corkwing, Rock Cook, Lesser Sandeel, Sand Smelt

Report:

Got to the venue at around 5pm and got set up, immediately started picking up plenty of Wrasse, Pollack and Coalies, Ragworm seemed to pick up the most fish and we managed to get through a bag and a half during the session.
Plenty of small fish making an appearance around the surface, summised that they were probably wee Pollack and wrasse and thought nothing else of it, until Daniel pointed out the light coloured backs on some of them and said it was likely they were sand smelts.
A basking shark, easily 15ft in length passed by within 40yds of the shore, the fishing was forgotten briefly as we watched the gentle giant cruise toward the mouth of the lough...
I got the mini feathers on, baited with small bits of Ragworm hoping for a couple of goby species, it didn't happen, but picked up a Rock Cook, since Dan hadn't had his for the year I handed the rod to him, and within a couple of minutes Dan also had his Rock Cook...
Trying to keep on top of all the rods became chore like so I left the Bass Rod in, and kept the big rod fishing the bigger baits in the hope of a decent codling, meanwhile the mini rod was picking up plenty of small Codling, Pollack and Whiting...
I went for something to eat, and while I was away Rhys managed a Sand smelt on my tini feathers, result! So spurred into action by this I fished on hard and was finally rewarded with 2 in quick succession.
Daniel managed to catch a lesser sandeel, which must be highly unusual? I then gave him my mini rod in hope of him hooking up with his Sand smelt for the year, it didn't happen but he did see plenty of action from the smaller fish.
A great variety session, can't wait for the next... 8)
