Benone Strand & Portrush, Co Londonderry 23/07/2011
People: Gabbey and Drew
Duration: 12pm - 10pm
Tide: Big n Wet
Weather: Gorgeous
Bait: Rag, Mackeral, Razor
Rigs: Loops, Flappers, Mini's, DDPs
Results:
Around 60 Flounders and 3 Turbot on Benone
Leopard Spot Goby, Rock Goby, Pouting, Poor Cod, Coalfish, Ballan Wrasse, GS Wrasse, Dab on Portrush
Report:
Well a day out up the coast was in order and Gabbey and I decided to try Benone for a spot of Flattie bashing, the beach was full... of swimmers, surfers, Jetskis, walkers, dogs, cars windbreakers and 1990 Vauxhall Cavaliers. Not to be put off we went to the quiet end of the beach and got two rods each set up.
With some immediacy we started picking up Flounders in Singles, doubles and trebles, Straight Mackeral, and Rag tipped with Mack was seriously doing the business, average fish, ranging from 20 to 30cm kept the rods nodding practically all day.
In the middle of all this I decided I needed my Turbot for the year, so started fishing Long mackeral strips on a loop rig, Managed 2 Turbot in 2 Casts, another species down for the year! Not to be outdone Gabbey got the biggest Turbot of the day with a 24cm fish.
A brief stop in Castlerock for some chips and it was time to find a little harbour for a spot of variety fishing.
We were considering Portstewart but there seemed to be a lot of Pier divers on it, so we shifted on round to good old Portrush.
When we got round here fishing was initially slow, soon Ronald and company arrived down though, and with one of Ronalds extra secret dangling rigs, Gabbey and I soon managed to bump the species lists up another bit, funniest moment was when a coalfish took the small baits and started charging about on the small spinning rod, great craic, thought I'd hooked a steam train!
With the arrival of 10.30pm (we WERE for leaving at 9pm), it was time to head home.
One of the best days Shore fishing I think I've ever had. Loved every moment of it.

Hi Drew,
Interesting report -good to see a change in tactics land you your target species and then finish off with a longer than expected stay at the Port with some very unusual species - I'd defo need the guide book with me if I had landed some of those.

Re: Benone Strand & Portrush, Co Londonderry 23/07/2011
Was a brilliant day, would of liked to hit a bass but well leave it for another 2 weeks
and see how we do haha
Brilliant to have a day of not having to much time to relax with the rods doubling every 5-10 mins or so.
Id like to try it again from early morning with better rigs set up as fixing some on the way isnt the smartist haha
Still say the best moment was when Drew was stripping line to re add it and I walked across and started rolling it round my hand with a slow motion NOOOOooo being the only thing to tell me he needed it again haha sorry Drew
Least that leopard goby makes up for it
