Crosshaven RNLI assist three men in burning boat

Date: 21/07/2011

Author: Jon Mathers, Lifeboat Operations Manager

Three men had to jump into the sea this evening (21 July) after their 21ft angling boat caught fire in the main shipping channel between Fort Camden and Fort Mitchell.

Fortunately, Crosshaven RNLI lifeboat volunteers, Gary Heslin, Warren Forbes and Geraldine Farrell were on exercise at Ringaskiddy when they were alerted to the incident and quickly made their way to the scene.

On arrival the three men had been removed from the water by the boats Apollo and Stugots.

The lifeboat requested that Apollo make immediately for the lifeboat station where the lifeboat Doctor was waiting.

The lifeboat transferred the remaining casualty on board and also returned to the station.

The Doctor gave the men a health check and warmed them up in the showers. No further medical intervention was required.

The lifeboat returned to the scene and stood by until the arrival of the Naval Vessel, LE Aishling who extinguished the blaze. The boat later sank.

Well done Donal.... heard the Mayday and headed straight for the emergency... pulled two survivors from the water and delivered them to the RNLI Station in Crosshaven.

I was out on a charter boat the evening this happened. We could see smoke coming out of the harbour but had no idea what was happening till we arrived on dry land later in the evening. Glad every one was ok and fair play to all involved in the rescue.

Well done Donal, I was wondering what the dodgy email from the Baron was all about. I had the misfortune recently of needing Sean Ivorys services to pull me out of a sticky situation following a capsize on a kayak, its not a pleasant experience bobbing about in the water on your tod lifejacket or not.

Donal.
Newspaper report suggest they were fishing and started the main engine but it reved light a made thing so they turned it off and tried the aux... but in doing so the aux fell into the water.. they fished it out but it was...wet... so they tried the main again and it kept revving and revving louder and louder and faster and faster... they tried to turn it off but this time it would not stop and smoke started pouring out before it ignited...

After I read .... I went out the following day and rechecked my aux!

All too easily could have been a repeat of the Castletownbear tragedy.
Top marks for being in the right place at the right time!
