FANTASTIC MACKEREL FISHING TRIP, SKERRIES

#1 Post by dave mc gregor »

just a quick post about my trip today

myself and 2 friends decided to go out mackerel fishing for the day ,

we left skerries harbour at 7pm and came back in at 10.30pm,

the sea was like glass , not 1 ripple on the water and the sun was beating down, = a fishermans dream!!

we were using 3 hooks each and dropping mid water , between the islands , every drop produced 3 mackerel each,

one of the best mackerel trips iv had in a long time , i caught 168 mackerel today and the 2 lads caught roughly the same ..

now before all the conservation anglers have a go at me , the reason we kept them is we do a lot of beach fishing and we might head out once a year mackerel fishing to fill our freezers for the year so we have a good supply for our beach trips , plus iv a wife and 3 kids who love mackerel and have a few family coming tomorrow for a BBQ. yum yum

i also keep all the heads/guts etc frozen to use as rubby dubby for our boat trips so there is no waste at all,,,,

what a fantastic day , now to have a beer and relax and plan our next beach trip!!

trying to upload photos but it wont allow me,, took them from an iphone

Dave I wouldnt worry about the danger of damaging mackerel stocks with a roughly 500 harvest. Those big boats that target mackerel in the north of Scotland take tens of thousands of tonnes in one scoop, I cant rememeber the exact figure for one good haul but its like your catch multiplied by 5000, and that may not even look at it. Its collossal.

Enjoy the very useful mini harvest you got today, its not every day you can get that kind of fishing.

Great evening's fishing! Mackerel fishing can be terrific fun when you hit the shoal in good conditions. There is never anything wrong with bringing your fish home as long as they are for the pan or bait or are not preserved! Good Luck on the beaches !

fair play to ye mate, there is not a lot of people even catching mackerel from the shores at the minute, so ye should keep as much as ye can, because with the supertrawlers cleaning them out, the prices for them will shortly be going up and even they will be too expensive for bait.. There was a good topic on this last week...
