Fishing Related Injuries

#1 Post by yngkmd »

Currently i am sat in the house with a broken leg from falling on rocks, have nearly 30 years fishing and having nothing worse that a hook in the finger i finally had a proper accident

i broke my fibula and had a plate and 2 pins inserted to fix it, also bolloxed my ankle and had to have another pin inserted joining my fibula and tibula which is holding my ankle in place while it heals and will need another operation to get this out again in 3 months.

aside from the 8 inch scar on my leg the long term damage is minimal and am expected to make a full recovery (eventually)

im sure other people have been more unlucky than me and was wondering if anyone else would care to share their fishing related injuries

also feel free to turn it into a pissing contest as im really bored stuck in the house and could do with the entertainment

Fishing Related Injuries

#2 Post by stevecrow74 »

Ouch!!!

Couple of years ago the day of a comp I was getting my things together, and as I stepped of the last step of the stairs I heard a loud snap!!!
Continued to hop about and get everything together to fish the comp and do a weekend fishing, the following week I got it checked out..
Turned out I snapped my anterior cruciate ligament, spent the best part of a year in crutches and a leg brace..

Before that while cycling to dig bait I came off the bike (straight over the handlebars) the pitch fork narrowly missed my head by inches and as I landed I dislocated my shoulder, sat up and popped it back and continued to dig bait...

Hi yngkmd,

I'm sorry to hear that... I could just imagine your feeling of that injury and not being able to go out and fish. Maybe you can go out to some pier and use the rocket launcher rods on the other thread... just to pass the time and still do some bit of fishing.... :)

Luckily I haven't had any major fishing injury myself aside from the scratches here and there... a month ago I was in one of the cliffs lined up with loads of mack bashers and newbies... I saw an incident that looked a bit painful and a little funny.... One of the newbies hooked the ear of the guy fishing next to him and at the same time throwing his rod on the cliff when it got snagged on the ear of the guy beside him... I could still hear what the guy said " What the F.... are you doing!!!" That was the time I had to pack up and leave before things turn ugly...

But then again... accidents happen...

Hope you recover soon.

Tight Lines!!!

Was Bass fishing in Jersey Easter last year and managed to trip over the only stone on a flat sandy beach. Fell to my hands and knees, surf rolled in and soaked me. Got up cussing about being wet and forgot all about it.

5 days later, back home, had to be rushed overnight to the Mater for an emergency spinal op for Cauda Equinna Syndrome. Spent the next 3 days wondering if I'd spend the rest of my life in a wheelchair, and spent the rest of the summer in Rehab learning how to walk again.

Not a fun time.

Might've been caused by the fall in Jersey, might not. Never know, really.

But, enjoy the painkillers. And take plenty of prune juice!

Nothing too serious for myself, only having to smell mb3's re-re-re-re-re-re frozen bait and 2 year old lug left out the back garden in a bucket  and a hook in the hand!
A relative of my girlfriend lost an eye Pike fishing though...the lad he was fishing with hit him in the eye with a lure and got a treble hook in the eye

Haha very good. Similar story... When I was about 16 I used to do a bit of freshwater fishing. One day my mate suggested we make a day out of it and head off somewhere. So a few days later we packed our bags. Rods, reels, tackle, loads of munch and 12 cold cans of Fosters. Got to Howth reservoir, set up my mate with a small spinning rod and a mepp spinner. First cast caught in the tree! I told him to lightly shake it but he pulled it hard and the spinner flew out and into his cheek!!! Day ruined... First tried to cut it, no luck. Second idea was to drink all the beer really fast, get drunk and pull the hook out. Didnt work. Ended up packing up and going into the Deer Park hotel and getting them to phone his Ma who came and brought him to the hospital. Doctor had a tough job gettin it out but did in the end. To this day he hasnt gone fishing with me but said he might come out on the boat with us soon. Whats the worst that can happen?
The way to a fisherman's heart is through his fly...

At the age of 12 got a big treble hook stuck in my skull, thanks to my fishing buddy (which since this time is not my buddy anymore  ). Rush to the hospital, little operation and a few stitches ...

I can't remember how I manage this one but got my hand badly bitten by a 12 lbs pike  .

2 years ago, fall on the seaside of Dunlaoghaire pier, badly damage my knee and my proud :?

Last year get stung by a jellyfish hidden in the weed while bass fishing :|

And this year, got my nose nearly broken by a 9 lbs smoothound who slap my face with his tail while hauling him out of the water for somebody else ...

All in all a few scratches, but nothing serious like you ... Hope you will get well soon :D

Last saturday my mate dislocated his knee spinning at kilmichael point luckily he popped it back and made it out of the rocks ok. On the way back we met another angler who had just slipped in off the rocks in his waders.

Had nothing major happen, when i was about 12 i came down barefoot after a shower and stood on a string of mack feathers i had left by the back door. always pack up your hooks!

:o :o jeese man that looks rough :!: you'll be needing to change your usernam to frankenstine or T-1000 (terminator)

the oul catchphrase would be very apt too " i'll be back!! " then the fish won't be able to escape you 8)

When i was a kid I was fishing in the States for Snappers (small Blue fish, very tasty and a lot of fun) anyways I had one miss cast , I didnt notice anything so I reeled in and looked up and the rod bent backwards behind me, thinking I snagged a tree I turned around but the rod kept pointing behind me?!??! So I presumed the treb hook was snagged in my jacket I took one arm out then the other, but the jacket wouldnt come off and felt a pull on my back, two of the prongs of the treb hook were emmbedded in my back!! Went to the doctor, he took the hooks out (but had to cut them) :( and it was my best lure, a quick plaster, and trip to the local tackle shop I was back out on the pier that afternoon!! (I kinda noticed a theme here with various fishermen, unless we are completly maimed theres no stopping US!!!

Slipped when fishing of the rocks last year in Greenore and broken all the ribs on my right hand side, straight to the hospital in so much pain that I couldn't breath well at all and all the a&e could do for me was give me pain killers as they don't strap you up anymore...... What pain I had for the next 6-7 weeks....

Stabbed myself in the leg with the baiting needle after a slight stumble, had to take out and head to the hospital again for more stitches.....

What a hardy bunch we are or just pure fools......

Promised my girlfriend I wouldn't bring fishing rod on holiday to Galway, brought one anyway, got in a huge row about "when exactly did I think I was going to sneak off to go fishing" after which it all came out that I used to pretend to be working late but really I was fishing on various occasions when her family visited.

Injury: A major headache for about a month
