Hectic Harbour Hardcore! Co Down 10/06/11

#1 Post by Drew »

People: Myself and Sheppy

Duration: Around 6.30pm to 9.30pm, followed by 9.50pm til 11.30pm

Tide: Over High

Weather: Lovely, colder later

Bait: Rag, Mackeral

Rigs: Flappers, Pulleys, DDPs, Conger Running Leger, Flowing Trace

Results:

Around 25 Coalies, 20 Pollack, 25 Ballan Wrasse, 5 or 6 Corkwings, A GS Wrasse, 2 Codling (nearly 3, see report :( ) 2 Shore Rockling

Report:

Mark one was a secluded Harbour on the Co. Down coast, seldom fished by Site members, and even more seldom reported on. Decided to head here with Shep to see if there was much about it. Answer being, it was packed with fish, From first cast onwards we were picking up Doubles of Wrasse on the Flappers, Coalies and a Codling. Straight rag seemed to be the prefered bait and 3 rag baits didn't last too long as they were being decimated by what I can only assume where scores of Goldsinneys. It was comical, I'd be holding my spinning rod, and get a bite on the Beachcaster, hand the rod to shep, and immediately we'd have double hook ups! This happened several times! Some of the bites were savage and a couple managed to bury themselves in the weeds never to been seen again...
I got a bite on the Rag baits which buried me in the Rough, finally got it free and continued playing the fish, it felt good, like a big Coalfish, but when I got it to the top I was greeted with a Red Codling which would have easily have been over the 4lb Mark! Happy days! A new personal best! or so I thought.... as I bowed the rod to lift the fish out of the water it slipped the size 4 b940m, I was inconsolable... and several moments of silence passed before I could bare to fish again...
Shortly afterward the tide had swung round and the mark became pretty unfishable... A couple more wrasse and it was time for a move.

The second mark is much like the first, except around 30 minutes away, I was still reeling (excuse the pun), from the run in with the almost Codling, and got a 2 hook flapper into the new venue, Sheppy fished for congers here, with no success, pity, I'd love to have seen a wee one. He did however, managed to catch a small Codling here, while I managed 2 Shore Rockling on the Bottom fishing gear. As the last of the light faded we had the best fun picking up loads of Pollack and Coalies on Spun ragworm, got to the point that the coalies were coming clean out of the water around us... Really brilliant to watch!
As the night drew to a close, we agreed it was by far one of the best sessions yet.
Hope to repeat it again soon.
Drew

Sounds like a great session Drew, hopefully not a one off, hardlines (no pun intended) on the cod! Nice wrasse! Were the Pollack and Coalies of any size, I like the idea of spinning the ragworm! Me and fishy have just about given up on the peninsula, apart from the old Dee, when we need a bail out, as we have covered some miles in that area which resulted in some very disappointing sessions, from what initially looked very good marks!
