rough fishing swilly 8-6-11

#1 Post by MC »

People:just me

Date : 8-6-11

Venue: the swilly

Duration: just over 3 hours, 10.30pm first cast

Tide:hw about 1am

Weather: for june it was great, heavy showers, strong gusts, fast flowing tide and rather cold

Bait:squid and mackerel

Rigs: 3/0 pulley pennel and 1/0 2hook clipped up

Results: 12 doggies the best tipped scales at 4lb on the nose but most where around the 2lb mark or smaller

Report: was watching tv after putting the wains to bed and the wife put some health show on, feck that i thought i may as well go fishing after all i am off thursday. One hour later I am casting out into the swilly, baiting up the second rod the first pulls round and the first doggie of the night comes in and how a 1lb doggie fits a 3/0 pennel rig and a whole squid in its gob is amazing. A few more dogs come in all on the distance rod, which went quiet at hw and then the close in rod starts bouncing, mackerel bait did very well but whole squid at distance accounted for the 4lb doggie. The water was highly coloured so wasnt expecting any rays but you never know, had to use 7oz grippers not to hold bottom but to get the bait out into the sea as the wind was strong, blew my reel pouch away so that will teach me to keep light object weighed down. You dont expect to wear a full floatie suit and fleece in june but boy was i glad to be wearing them last night.

Father in law got a double of dog and double figure ray which broke the cheap reel I lent him as 1st time fishing. The ray got free and taunted us by swimming on surface for ages. I got one about the same size and when I tried landing it felt like half a breeze block but almost landed it when hook pulled out at top of harbour wall. Got loads of good sized dogs like yourself but about 2am had a shark shaped fish about 7-8lb which broke 30lb snood when hauling it up. Any idea what it may have been in that area? Not sure if there are huss in swilly myself. Was a funny night weather wise and very strong tidal flow like you say. Earlier today tried kinegar beach for few hrs with rag and sandeel but got one bite. Expected to get flounder there. Is that beach crap or is it better at night? Any nearby beaches to recommend for daytime fishing for next few days? Thanks in advance if you can help and nice report btw

i am hoping there are huss in the swilly i keep trying but no joy, doggies and huss have sandpaper like skin which they rub on snoods and it wears them, not too sure on the beaches as havent been fishing much, try culdaff it normally fishes well, never fished kinegar sorry
