I pulled this out of the gut of a 3lb Pollack - what is it ?

#1 Post by flynnboy »

Hi Guys,

I was gutting a nice 3lb Pollack last Sunday when I found this - see picture. It is about 1' long and has a head and mouth very similar to a sea-horse. Does anyone have any idea exactly what it is ?

That's a pipefish - close relative of a seahorse.
And I looked, and behold a pale horse: and his name that sat on him was Death, and Hell followed with him.

I had several fish around the 3lb mark that morning. Inside one of the others there were 5 prawns obviously just swallowed as they were undigested - so we cooked them and ate them, as well as the fish

A novel way to get hold of some good shellfish. They couldnt be fresher. I got pipefish in pollacks throats here in Antrim before as well, always interesting to look a pollacks gut if youve kept them, never know what youll find, Id recommend people to try to do it and share their findings, no jokin.

Wouldnt want to promote fish killing just for this purpose, no way. But if folk take an odd one, check the stomach? Ive seen a couple of species I would probably never see in my life if not for this way.

Prawns rock, were they big?
2013 Sea Species:- Bass, Flounder, 5 Beard Rockling, Shore Rockling, Whiting, red gurnard, grey gurnard, Pollack, coley, mackerel, sea trout, cant remember cos I didn't update at the time.....

2011 Sea species:- codling, L.S. dogfish, coley, whiting, pollack(4lb 3oz), sea trout, shore conger eel (15lb), ballan wrasse, grey gurnard, plaice, dab (and lobster).
