th kennels, donegal 24-5-11

#1 Post by MC »

People:just me

Date :24-5-11

Venue:donegal pier aka the kennels

Duration:7pm to 12.30am

Tide: low water up

Weather:windy only rained when i was packing up

Bait:mackerel and sandeel

Rigs:2 hook clipped up and long and low

Results:woof city, 21 lsd and a 4.5lb thronback ray

Report:
with plans to fish a rock mark on sunday cancelled due to the weather and i am going to on the wee brothers stag do over the weekend( hope to be in portugal so feck off ash cloud ) so i am missing a club match(sorry Ronan) Anyway i checked the forcast and tides and it looked good, so after dinner and kitchen cleaned i buggered off to a local pier, with the hopes of a fish or two. Got lines in the water for 7pm and 10minutes later my first doggie, nice size too. My second cast was a small bite followed by a pull over, ray on and what a fight it put up using the tide to dive and kite, it took sandeel and weighed in at 4.5lbs. Hopes high the second rod was cast out with sandeel but it was dog city after that, mackerel or sandeel it didnt matter, at one stag i had double dogs on one rod and another on the deck waiting to be unhooked. One ray and 21 doggies later i was running out of bait, some of the dogs where big, the best was just shy of 4lbs. As i was packing away one rod the other one trembled and was then jerked out of the tripod i was lucky to catch the butt as line peeled off the reel and the rod doubled over, it only lasted a few seconds when it came loose, the hook had pulled straight i am guess it was a big, big ray or a wee tope. With heart in mouth i packed away my gear vowing to return with bigger, stronger hooks and a drop net. The weed was a small problem as was the wind but i was using heavy gear and 6oz grips so i managed to get the casts out and the fish in, the only thing i didnt manage was to remember the camera so no photos again.
