Results: Me: 6 flounder, 1 weever (i think)
Fishy: 9 flounder, 1 turbot
Red: 10+ flounder i think


Report: Hit the beach for a flattie session. The wind was very strong and blew over the tripods a few times. There was a small bit of weed in the surf but it was still easy fishing. I was the first off the mark with a flounder on black lug, next was red with a flounder on maddies and we had a few more before fishy got his first fish. Me and red were just chatting about his catch of a turbot on this beach before when fishy pulled one in, caught on mackerel strip. Not too often you see them caught at that mark so we were glad to see one. Fishy had a burst of fish for the next while until he ran into a bit of bother with a snapped line and a few tangled rigs so it gave me and red a chance to catch up. Red took full advantage of this and started to pull in doubles of flounder. Things slowed down a bit for me but i was still getting the odd flounder and then i pulled in what i think is a weever. The flounder carried on coming in after this, nothing huge, fish to about 26/27cm i'd say. Then red decided it was time to call it a day so reeled in another double of flounder and hit the road. Me and fishy stayed on for a bit longer but we had no more fish. So it was a nice session with a few fish each and a new species for me and fishy. Thanks for the dvd red. I'll give it a look over later on and try to put some of the tips to use on thursday night if this wind dies off.

I always wondered about that mark wether there were bigger turbot nearby... I dived there a few times but have not seen them.... but they are so well camoflauged I could be sitting on one without seeing it!

One of my goals for this summer is a large turbot, I'll be basing myself in that area and I will try from the shore with rod, from the boat with rod and from the water diving.

I know there was nothing of great size but there's been no reports from the south recently so i thought i'd put this up to show that there are still fish down this part of the country. And catching plenty of small fish is alot better than catching no fish at all. Also the turbot was very small but it's still a nice catch for this part of the country. Not too many show up around here.

Cheers donnyboy. I don't know what you'd regard as a big turbot but i'd say your setting yourself a tough task. Best of luck with it anyway. I'll try flappers with mack and sand eel the next time i'm down there and see what shows up. If we start seeing them in any numbers i'll let you know.

thats definatly a weever, i couldnt see the black fin/spikes yesterday but you can clearly see them in the photo, it was the colours in the tail that made me a little unsure as id looked at plenty of pics of them but never took any notice of the tail , thankfully we took caution with the little bugger.

2 new species and a good catch of flats would satisfy me anytime (not every anglers dream) Ever hear Size doesn't matter?granted they were not 40cm plus flounders however if you refer to quality soley as size thats fine.But the QUALITY of the flats were amazing, beautiful patterns and a interesting leftsided flounder added to a good night for me!

we cant all be catching 20/25lb Bass like ye do up the coast , especially not when i was using size 4 hooks, tiny baits and flicking them out, my biggest cast was into the suds at about 15yards, might have gotten better "quality" fish if we had fished a bit further out and used bigger baits but we were aware and respectfull of the closed season for bass, hence the smaller fish. id have rather caught smaller flounder all day than run the risk of catching, and potentially harming a decent sized female bass who was ready to spawn and deep hooked.

Fair play that's a mighty haul of flounders, must have been a bit of craic with all of ye catching a fair few. Well done on the turbot and weever, I've never seen one of them in the flesh (although maybe that's a good thing cause of their sting!).

Well done lads, not an easy job avoiding the hordes of Bass down there in East Cork, but ye managed it . Nice Turbot too and a nice pic of the weever to remind lads to be wary

I wasn't too sure myself but i wasn't taking any chances with it. I was bad enough gettin nipped by the maddies without getting stung by the weever as well.

The weever took black lug off the bottom snood but the middle snood hooked him in the back as well. I managed getting the hook out of his mouth easily but i was a bit more cautious of the one in his back as it was right below the spines. In the photo you can see the hook in his back which i did manage to get out in the end and release him to sting another day.

I was glad to see the weever as it's a new species. Just didn't touch him so it wasn't a problem.

If you look at the "smallest flats" post, I've already submitted a photo of a tiny flounder that i caught on an east cork beach as well.

Cheers, i'd say there are plenty of bass out there alright judging by the bird activity. Perfect conditions for them. Size 6 hooks and black lug tends not to tempt the bass down that way.
