Bag limit on Mackeral ? ? ?
I have heard talk of there being a bag limit on Mackeral being introduced this year . Has anyone heard anything on this subject ?
If I'm not gonna catch a fish , I may aswell not catch a BIG fish !

Re: Bag limit on Mackeral ? ? ?
It could not happen as there is no one to police rod caught sea fish apart from sea trout and bass which both have closed seasons and bag limits which are implemented by the fisheries boards.

Ah what would all the mac bashers do maybe use two bags...... once the fish is touched by our hand even if they are put back they wont live due to the soft skin they have.... so never heard of a bag limit to the mac.... cant wait to get the bait freezer full

well
when the macks are on the feed they would jump into the feckin bag...seriously though most rod caught Macks are eatin, given to neighbours etc...bout 20% of mine are frozen and used as bait...with great results...

They can be shaken off the hook to be released, I'd often do this with the smaller ones.once the fish is touched by our hand even if they are put back they wont live due to the soft skin they have

Re: Bag limit on Mackeral ? ? ?
Sad fact is we need alot of mackeral so nothing can be put back, by the time you have neighbours and friends sorted its time to catch for bait and i always use up all these as well. If I started putting back Mackeral id have to go into tesco or a bait shop and buy more evertime I needed some, and in the end of the day it would work out with the same number of Mackeral being killed only difference is I would have to pay for them, But its not even having to pay for them, its nice to have your own bait to use when you need it instead of heading to the shops looking for it.
The finest gift you can give a fisherman is to put a good fish back, and who knows if the fish that you caught isn't someone else's gift to you?"

Re: Bag limit on Mackeral ? ? ?
This sort of thing has cropped up before in another Mack related topic. The "Chris Andra" of Scotland and TV's Trawlermen fame was netting 400ton catches of Mack quite regular. The way I see it (being no sort of fish expert) is that if they weren't taken out in their thousands and consumed (feeds/baits whatever) would they not take over? 400tonnes is a lot of individual Mack to tear it's way through an ocean..
Look at it like culling rabbits and deer,if you don't they both spread disease and over populate. But like anything of the kind, taking too many can and will have negative effect (like the increased cost of tasty venisen :O)

Re: Bag limit on Mackeral ? ? ?
Agreed, I dont care how many anybody takes once they are getting used be it eaten or for bait.Sad fact is we need alot of mackeral so nothing can be put back, by the time you have neighbours and friends sorted its time to catch for bait and i always use up all these as well. Personal catches will impact very little on stock levels if at all, given what the super trawlers can take in one shoot of the net.

Re: Bag limit on Mackeral ? ? ?
They have already taken too many. Mackeral used to appear in numbers in early June in Dun Laoghaire now you have to wait till July/August and there is now where near the numbers that there once was. I would see mackeral more of a food supply for other fish rather than taking away from them. Normally they eat their own fry and so do other fish as well as eating the mackeral.Ocean Roar wrote: But like anything of the kind, taking too many can and will have negative effect (like the increased cost of tasty venisen :O)

Irish Annual quota for mackerel for 2011 is approximately 68,000 tonnes.http://debates.oireachtas.ie/dail/2011/01/12/00025.aspMAC wrote:Rampent Wreckfish wrote:Try 500 tonnes KevMAC wrote:saving private brian wrote:maybe they would be better goin after these RSW pelagic trawlers![]()

Re: Bag limit on Mackerel ? ? ?
Fair enough. I've had a few seals at the end of my line over the last few years too. I don't think they are affecting the mackerel stocks as much as trawlers though.

Re: Bag limit on Mackeral ? ? ?
Given an adult fish weights 300 - 500 grams, call it 400g or .4 kg for the purpose of this exercise.Labyrinthfish wrote: Irish Annual quota for mackerel for 2011 is approximately 68,000 tonnes.http://debates.oireachtas.ie/dail/2011/01/12/00025.asp

1 tonne = 1,000 kg.
So, 68,000 tonnes = 68,000 x 1,000 = 68,000,000 kg.
That 68,000,000/.4 = 170,000,000 individual fish.
Without taking into account any discards/high grading.
170 million fish for one country alone.
