East Antrim 14May

#1 Post by chuckaroo »

People: me and a mate

Duration: 5pm - 8pm

Tide: comin in

Weather: sun and showers. nice in between

Bait: rag, spinner

Rigs: hooks and weights and beads

Results: me 8 fish, mate 6 fish. mixed bag/more of the same. see below.

Report: my mate found a wee rod under the stairs from when he was a kid (25years ago) and insisted in using it, but with putting a new reel on it - it was one of those wee kiddy rod and reel cheapo starter combo packs for under a fiver - he never looked back :D a good few fish caught and good craic.
he caught the wrasse(s) (can anyone define exactly what type of wrasse they are?) so i havent got any new species to add for the year. i so nearly killed 2 of the plaice as they were almost keepers, beautiful fish, but didnt in the end.
there was a lot of people fishing in the area, i was wandering how they got on but didnt get a chance to chat to them. we are goin to try a slightly different spot tonight so it should be interesting..

thanks for the posts lads. yeah, i thought they were both ballan alright, its just that the first one has no markings as such..
but anyway, we went fishing again tonight in a similar place. similar sizes of fish again but a whole array of species. my mate caught 22 fish and i caught 16. none worth keeping, the biggest fish was a pollack about 1.5lb.
he had 11 species in total over the 2 days! and believe it or not i didnt add any fish to my species list for the year. he has more than me already..
his species included: doggies, s.s.sea scorpion, shore rockling, cod, plaice, pollack, coley, dab, rock cook, ballan, and... a sea trout (v.small). i wasnt too impressed with his efforts as he's only a part-timer!... :P
there are a hell of a lot of plaice in Red Bay at the moment.

pretty much casting out to clean sandy ground Brian but we were also dropping our lines just below our feet into deepish water around the rocks we were standing on. these rocks have kelp on them and there is a stoney and sandy bottom close in.

cheers

oh yeah, and i met a few guys competing in a comp. i spoke to one and asked him how he was getting on and he said that he had had a sea trout and a... wait for it.... a DILL.
he was defo a seasoned angler with all the gear and i said to him that surely he meant a dab. he said no and went on to explain that there were dab, and plaice, and turbot, and brill, but that there was also small flatties called dill. was he takin the hand outta me........? :? :P
he defo sounded convinced but i have never heard of them. ever. anywhere.
has anyone else...? maybe its a local name for a type of flattie from somewhere else. or maybe he actually just caught a bunch of some herbs..

Thats a nice species haul for the day.

The short spined sea scorpian looks more like a long spined to me.

Defo no "dill" fish found on google in our waters, so as you say unless its a local slang term for a different species I'd say he's taking the p*ss

thanks shamoo. ok, i wasnt sure whether it was a short or long spined, i just took a wild guess, so thanks for that.
and im convinced theres no such thing as a 'dill' too. think someone has been takin the p*ss outta HIM in the past!.... :D
has anyone else got an opinion on this 'dill' issue please....?? (i think the guy himself is a member on here.. :? )
