North Down Rough Ground, 13/05/11

#1 Post by Drew »

People: Just Me

Duration: 6.30pm-9pm

Tide: Up n Over

Weather: 1 Shower

Bait: Ragworm

Rigs: 2 Hook Flapper, Sheppy, Pulley

Results:

3 Codling to 31cm, 2 Shore Rockling, 1 Male Corkwing, 20 Odd Coalies, 3 biggest were 37cm, 41cm, and 1 Fella who was longer than the ruler, he was 1.3kg so if someone can translate that into pounds... lol

Report:

Didn't really envisage myself fishing tonight as the weather predicted seemed pretty bad, but while I was in work I decided what the hell, so a quick call to BAC secured 2 bags of rag.

Arrived at the venue and set up, things were slow to start, with only the Corkwing and a Shorey, but soon I was picking up plenty of Coalies, some in double shots along with an Odd Codling.

The bigger Coalie went off like a freight train, must have picked up the bait and swam towards me as the bite was timid to say the least, wound like stink to keep up with it, and had great fun trying to control it as it charged about under the rod tip, great fun on the evo! 8)

Another cracker of an evening.

nice coalie

i think they are vastly underrated in terms of their fighting ability, i love catching them on light gear, get some fight of them even though thet are rarely over a pound, i can only imagine the fun i would have had with a 3lber :D

They usually hit areas like Glenarm en-masse sometime around July/August for a while after the sand eels. It's crazy how, even in such numbers, they manage to stay in their own separate shoals according to size, ie. 1lb, 2lb, 3lb, 4lb when every stretch of water is pure frenzy. Other species, i notice sometimes, have assorted sizes in shoals but coalies usually seem more orderly. Has anyone else found this to be the case ?

now you mention it, when a shoal of coalies move in any you catch are generally the exact same size as each other. whether they are 1lb or 4 ounces.

i wonder if they live in a big family shoal their whole lives, and it just gets smaller as they get bigger through deaths and general attrition

Yeah, in most spots I fish the Coalies are a uniform size, saying that, this particular spot has thrown up some real lunkers for me in the past...
