Doingean Mara: East Cork 11/05/11

#1 Post by Ronnach »

People: Mise

Duration: 17:00 - 20.30

Tide: Low at 18.30ish

Weather: Windy - moderate/fresh Westerly

Lures: Feed Shallow, Toby, Xlayer

Results: 1 Bass

Report:
Had been itching to get out for the past 10 days or so, but due to the bad weather had to put off a couple of planned outings. Finally said I'd give it a go this evening, even though the wind was still pretty strong and going to make the lure fishing tricky.

Got to the mark about an hour and a half before low tide so took the opportunity to scout out some new terrain and see how the all the structure looks at low water. The water was very soupy, and there were big chunks of kelp floating in various areas. I tried fishing with some soft plastic lures for half an hour or so but between the gusts of wind which made casting/retrieving hard and the coloured water I was beginning to lose heart.

Decided to walk westwards to try a few different spots, eventually settled on a rocky outcrop where there was less weed, at this stage it was fully low tide and the wind had dropped a small bit. I switched to a feed shallow and tried casting a few times near a rock outcrop in front of me. After about 5 casts got a bang and felt fish on :)

Initially the fish took some line before changing his mind and swimming directly towards me - for a few moments had slack line and reeled like a madman trying to get contact with the fish again, luckily he stayed on and with the help of a wave landed him safe and sound. I took a photo & measurement at around 59cm, 5.3lb's and decided to keep this one for the table. Apologies to C&R purists out there I do release the majority but decided to keep this fella and he will be enjoyed by the family.

Fished on for another 2 hours at various points along the coast - I probably spent more time walking than fishing, must have covered about 4-5km to-ing and fro-ing, but didn't have any more interest. The visibility in the water seemed to be less than a foot. I was delighted to get another bass in before the closed season kicks off this weekend, with some luck might get out again before then..

Thanks Frank, yep the feed shallow is fast becoming my favourite lure, although every time I hit weed at distance I'm afraid I'm going to lose it!

Thanks Evan, yeah I thought it would have weighed in a bit more for it's length, I guess he/she lost weight in the last few months.

Cheers Marco, not quite a full specimen but half-way there :)

On cleaning the fish I found the stomach contents contained a whole undigested large enough red crab, the body of the crab didn't have a hard back - does anyone know are crabs currently moulting or could the bass have already digested the back of the crab?
