We had planned a session for last night but were told by rockhunter that we wouldn't get a sniff of a bass unless we had fresh lug. So a plan was hatched to take an extra long lunch break and go digging. So with a successful dig and the last few bits of work out of the way we hit the road at about 5pm. Landed on the beach about 6 and met oli and his friend who had a few bass and flounder already. The surf was looking lovely and it was a nice calm warm evening so we got set up and started fishing. I had 2 rods out at all different distances with all different combinations of bait and a mix of different rigs and hook sizes. Didn't matter how big or small the baits were, how far or close they were cast. The crowds of rogue flounder that roam this beach were finding the baits straight away. I had a fish a cast for the first three casts. With two of these flounder a nice size, one was 1lb 2oz the other a much shorter but thicker fish of 1lb. I was glad to be getting nice size flounder but we were here for a reason and that was bass. As it started to get dark i popped on the tip lights and rebaited. I had fresh lug on one rod, thanks to frank for the tips. And some razor on the other, thanks to donal domeney who gave me the razor a few weeks back. The two rods were cast one in close, one as far as i could go. The one in close got a strong bang, then another so i struck and reeled in the first bass of the year, small but welcome. I noticed a few nods on the other rod but they weren't massive but maybe that was due to the distance i was fishing at so decided to give it a strike anyway. Bass no two leaped out of the surf a few minutes later. The same size as the last one. Popped him back into the surf and i re baited and re cast. Just relaxing for a minute when the line on one of the rods shot off westward parallel to the beach. I chased it down and struck and got a good scrap before landing the fish. He was bigger than the previous two but still nothing massive. Fishy had one flounder some time during the night so he was glad to beat the blank but we were both sorry he didn't get his first bass. Nice night out and we'll be back down soon to scratch the bass off fishys list.
