Rough Ground, North Down, 05/04/11
People: Just Me
Duration: 12.45 - 14.15
Tide: High
Weather: Rain, mild
Bait: Ragworm
Rigs: Sheppy
Results:
1 Coalfish 43cm
Report:
I don't know if I've ever mentioned this on my reports, but I'm fortunate to be blessed with 2 handy things out my bedroom window, 1. is a view of the sea, it may be 1/4 a mile a way but I can see the general conditions no problem, and 2. a big tree which gives me an indication as to how windy it is. The plan today was to spend the afternoon tying rigs and have an early night, so I got a couple of rigs tied, and looked out the window, the tree was still and the sea looked pretty flat. Next stop easytide... 13.30hw... Pressure was building now, as I knew I had a few rag from the weekend to use up. STUFF IT! Grabbed the 515, the Zziplex, 2 rigs, 2 Gripleads and the Tripod, gear into the Car, and I was off.
Arrived at the mark at 12.45pm, and first cast was made, a bit shorter than I would have liked, but decided to leave it there as we picked a few codling up closer in last year. after about 20 minutes it was time for a bait change. Another 2 rag on, and a better thump into the gully. Put the rod down and got fixated on the tip again, 5 minutes or so later I got a double tap and then a solid pull, It got its head into the weed and a bit of gentle persuasion was required to get it out. The evo performed perfectly allowing the fish to give a decent enough account of itself while keeping it firmly under control. Swung it in, and got a couple of photos before unhooking, measuring and the release.
Baited up again and got the rig into the same place, 10 minutes of a staring contest with the rod tip and another rip roaring bite nearly lifted the rod off the rest. Hit it, Solid. Sh*t. Left it for a minute hoping it would swim out, no such luck, so pointed the rod at the snag and walked it out, sadly the fish had eluded me this time. Ah well, a couple more fruitless casts and the rag was finished. Nice afternoon, well spent.
