lenan 2-4-11

#1 Post by MC »

People:just me

Date :2-3-11 running into the 3-4-11

Venue:lenan pier

Duration:10.30pm to 1am

Tide: dropping

Weather: very windy and the odd shower of rain

Bait: sandeel, mackerel and lug

Rigs: clipped down wishbone, pulley

Results:1 ray, 1 lsd and 4 coalies

Report: was meant to head fishing early in the day but was drafted into work ( the overtime comes in handy sometimes) so didnt get to leave at planned time and family being family i didnt think i would get to go at all. So when the baby was washed and fed and put into the cot, the wife said for me to go then, she didnt have to say it twice, gear packed and i was out the door so fast before anything else could crop up. Hit the pier and suited up got the rods set and baited up, cast one to the right and one to the left. I sat down thinking a wee coffee would be nice and the right hand rod rattled and then bent over, first cast, i couldnt believe it a nice wee ray.
thornback ray (Small).JPG
Quick photo and away she went, baited up a double sandeel and cast out, went to check the second rod and nothing on it, the mackerel wasnt touched, so one hook got a sandeel tail and the other a mackerel strip, lobbed it out and noticed the right hand rod was boucing away again, second cast a nice doggie. Once again a quick photo and away it went.
lsd (Small).JPG
no matter what i put on that rod for the rest of the night i didnt get another touch, apart from crabs cleaning the hook. So doing the usual, bait up and cast, check second rod bait it up and cast, and after a while i found a small shoal of coalie, they managed to clean the mackerel off the hooks but wouldnt touch any other bait, so smaller hooks and small strips of mackerel where put out and soon enough i was getting coalies, not big about 22cm but they did provide some fun, after a few missed bite and having landed 4 all bited dried up and the crabs came into force and cleaned hooks in minutes, so at 1am with low water approching i packed up and headed home a happy man, sometimes the fishing gods smile on you :D

lovely markings on that ray well done, a few of us went for a thornie session recently and unlike most recent posts about rays so far this year they were going for mack over sandeel about 2:1, funny they seem to be interested in dirrerent baits in different areas
