A North Antrim Seatrout Shocker! 29/03/11

#1 Post by Drew »

People: Bingham and Drew

Duration: 5pm - 9pm

Tide: Most of the push

Weather: Threatened rain, none arrived, 7'c.

Bait: Ragworm, Black Lug, Mackeral, Squid

Rigs: Loops, DDP, 2 Hook Flapper

Results:

A Few Plaice, a load of coalies, some dabs, a couple of Codling and.... A SEATROUT! 8)

Report:

First of all, I'd like to thank Al (of AlandJordan fame), for the bag of ragworm, it really helped out tonight, glad we got your car going again earlier mate! Wouldn't have liked to see you stuck in the East! Also, thanks to Bingham, who drove!

Ok, the report, got to the venue just before 5pm, to find the tide still very low, and got set up. I went for a bit of an explore, and Bingham had a Dab while I was away, when I came back Bingham informed me I'd been getting a few rattles. So, first retrieve for me yielded a Plaice, while Bingham had one which was dead thick, I'd say 3/4 of an inch and 23cm long.

So we got rebaited and the gear back in the water, I had a couple of knocks then the rod went over, Bingham immediately said Coalie, and I agreed, but there was power behind its fight, so it must have been a good one... Got it to under the rod tip and it ploughed off again, it WASN'T a Coalie! So I'm playing the fish, while shouting BASS! BASS! WAIT.... SEATROUT! Just then it threw itself out of the water and suspicions were confirmed! A couple of tense moments later and it was flapping about on the ground in front of me, got it unhooked, a few photos, measured in at 45cm then released it. Held it in the water a moment to allow some recovery, 2 kicks of the tail and it left my hands, regained its composure then shot off to the sanctuary of deeper water. So happy to see him, and happier to see him leave unharmed, only my 2nd Seatrout ever and a real surprise on this mark. 8)

The rest of the night was much the same, plenty of Flats and rounds coming in, Bingham had a nice wee Codling, and I was picking up plenty on the loop rigs on the bass rod. Plenty of wee Plaice making a showing.
I'm happy enough, another 2 species for the year, and the 100 hours fishing mark passed for 2011.
Can't wait to get out again! :D

Nice seatrout 8) Just out of interest what does 'DDP' stand for in your rigs section?
It ain't easy but it sure is simple!
