Kerry trip 29/03/2011

#1 Post by thescotsman »

I'll update this as the day goes on.
Part 1

Myself and Tim up this morning to fish a lovely estuary for some sea trout. Slow start, but as tide turned up from low, the fish came on strongly. We landed 5 and lost a few more with numerous tweaks on the lures. I had a thin blue/silver Toby, but Tim had more knocks with a small viva Maria (I think). Slow retrieve order of the day. Clear water and sunshine didn't seem to hamper the fishing - most pleasant morning I've had for a long time.
Tea break now and then off to beachcast on some Brandon bay beach.......

Phase 2 not so good fished gaulane beach and baits untouched so we're going to wait for the tide to drop off and try for some more trout before I head home.

Well done on the seatrout! They were driving me nuts in Fennel's Bay recently, I was using a small blue/silver toby also, but probably was retrieving too fast.. Do you let the lure sink much when targetting seatrout?

Cheers lads, yes it was a lovely day and a beautiful setting. We went back for the evening tide, but much colder and too much water. Tim managed another couple of trout. Nothing for me though.

Never caught one in the sea around Cork. They are forever jumping around, but not biting. Never made a concerted effort for it though around here as usually just get my licence for Kerry.

Where we were is a bit different from Fennels bay. All sandy, relatively shallow if you stay directly out of the channel, which even then isn't that deep. Anyway, yes letting it drop down and doing a slow retrieve was working. Tim's reel was smaller and slower (for similar hand movements) than mine, and he had much more fish related action than me, even when I started using his lures  . So I'd say at this time of year, slow and deep is better in general? In summer last year, I was hitting more trout than him, so maybe with the warmer water and more bait fish they are more lively and more likely to chase something...

The lures he uses are http://www.gofishing.co.uk/Angling-Time ... ade-lures/ Maria Viva parades (blue and dark one). 14g ones seemed best. Much less interest in the 21g ones, but only seems to be 21g and 28g available from the likes of veals and Henry's etc.
Those lures seem to have outfished anything else we have tried there so far.

Thanks for the very informative reply! It may be the case that Myrtleville / Fennel's Bay is not the best mark for them alright, I has assumed that when seeing them jump so often that they were on the feed, but maybe only for flies and not for a larger lure.
