East Cork Bass Session 26th Mar 2011

Tide: high about 10.30pm

Weather: Mild, over cast, easterly breeze

Bait: Lug, Razor, Peeler.

Rigs: 2/0, 2 hook flapper, 4/0,6/0 Pennel Pulley

Results: 3 Bass, 2 Flounder, 5 Codling, 1 Doggie


Report: I had no plans for the sat night so I decided for a few hours on the beach. I got to the mark just before the light faded and got set up. Thanks Dennis for a loan of the rod rest butt and top, they saved me from the stick and tape again. The tide was pushing in, I was casting at moderate distance, I got no bites until near the top of the tide when I was fishing a bit closer.

I got a good bending rattle on the Pennel with crab when I was kneeling down baiting up one rod, but by the time I got it in hand and lifted into it there was nothing on. Nothing else for a half hour then another good bite on the crab again, I felt a bit of weight but it wasn't tugging at all. It turned out to be a dogfish. I didn't get out the camera as I was a sandy mess after unhooking that fella.

The tide was starting to turn so I was fishing close with one rod and at moderate distance with the other. A few mins later I got a nice rattle on the rod in close with lug and crab but connected this time with the fish. It didn't feel big but it was a fighting fish nonetheless. It turned up a 35cm bass After that I started to get little taps on the lug at moderate distance but I was just reeling in stripped baits. Another cast or two got me a small flounder no bigger than my hand. I got the same again on the next cast.

Things died down for a while with nothing apart from a few slight taps. My bait was getting low, I used up the crab and I had a few small lug and razors left. I started fishing the lug and some crab claws I had left at distance. It was about 12.30am at this stage. I started to get some decent bites then. First I had a small codling, then another. I was hoping to get something a little bigger. Then I got a good bite but I thought I missed it until it was in the shallow surf. It turned up another bass but this was smaller than the first about 32cm. The first one barely went back so I didn't hang around with this one plus my camera batteries died taking a picture of the first bass. Off he swam anyway.

Over the next 30 mins I had another 3 codling, the biggest was 38cm. Then to top it off I had another small bass on some truly munched up bait. This one was only about 26-27cm. I quickly got him back into the surf again. I'm glad I hung on for the extra few hours as I got another 2 bass for my efforts and one codling to appease the other half Only one pic unfortunately...

Fair play on gettin a few bass. I'd say a 3 hook flapper with size 6 hooks would quickly find out what was stripping your baits in close. Might give it a go down that way on wednesday night. Seems to be throwing up plenty of fish. Nice session and report.

After that I started to get little taps on the lug at moderate distance but I was just reeling in stripped baits.

Probably small flounder, there seems to be a lot of them around at the moment, I was plagued with them the other night, used up all my lug which I had intended to last for another session.

Edit: was that you I was going to walk up to? Silver toyota. I saw a head lamp up the beach during the weekend but as I wasn't fishing and it was pitch black I decided better than walking up to someone just like that.

Cheers Cian, I have gleaned some usefull information from reports up here which were a bit more detailed. I think it not only helps others but it can also help me when others comment and give tips and point out techniques that can be improved etc. Good practice....

Thanks again Dennis. When I got home today the new rod rest butt and top where waiting for me. It took a bit longer for them to get here than I thought since they were sent from the UK on 16th of March, but hey, I ain't complaining, the good folks at http://www.uk.purefishing.com sent both parts out to me for free, post paid also, what more could I have hoped for, fantastic, and a big thank you to those guys is all I can say.

Yeah I thought of dropping down the hook sizes but I was hoping for bigger fish. I also found that tipping the lug with crab claws held the bait on better as the crab skin is thougher to strip. Something I will try again in the future.

Yeah its nice to get some variety. I had suspected they were small flounder alright as even small coalies will fall to bigger hooks. The crab claw trick seemed to work though. It was better than just wasting them anyway.

Decent results there Tony glad your getting a few nothing like them to be honest.Must say those grains of sand in the pictures are starting to look more and more familar and i know them individually at this stage with the recent spate of bass reports from east cork.

Cheers, I don't know how anyone could tell a place from grains of sand, You must have a keen eye. But sure keep it to yourself wherever you may think it might be. I've had a few PM's from cheeky folk asking me what beach I caught bass on. To me its like asking someone how much is in there bank account, you just don't go there!

It sure does, some of the best fishing I have had lately was after I decided to stick it out for longer than what I had intended. I think it probably shows that I am not great at judging times and tides etc. but sure i'm trying different beaches all the time so luck has to play its part too.

Sorry wasn't really directing that comment at you, i'm sure you guys who fish that area a lot know all those beaches like the back of your hand. Just passing a general remark that there are very cheeky folk out there.

Don't worry im not that sensitive anyways For what its worth totally agree with you on the cheeky folk ,just tell them put in the hours like the rest of us and then they will really appreciate catching a few.
