north antrim coast 28 March

#1 Post by chuckaroo »

People: me

Duration: few hours

Tide: dunno. up

Weather: nice but cool

Bait: squid and razor

Rigs: yip

Results: poor

Report:
thought i'd try somewhere that i dont fish too often up on the north coast - decided to target pollack and turbot.
did some spinning for pollack for nearly an hour at a rock mark over some weed but to no avail. gave up on that and so headed over to another little mark to fish over sandy ground in the hope of some flatties.
the rocks were covered in a thin layer of very dark seaweed that was near impossible to walk on - a slippery death trap! (can see it in the photos) so had to be real careful - just standing was a challenge! fished THREE rods with squid and razor and sat for a few hours. only had a few little pulls on the rods and ended up with two very small coley. felt like a blank

at least you got out a run. tides were not great either so that probably didnt help.

hmmm, dont know about the tides dave.. thats pretty deep water there - maybe 20feet - would the tides have such and influence for what i was fishing for..?? cheers

yeah nicki, i have fished it a few times now and never had anything too exciting. i was waiting for someone to recognise the mark, its pretty well known up around that way.
a mate led me down there one day and said 'watch this, i'll catch a turbot' .. he did first cast. and that was that. i have still to get one there tho.. :) but i have had mackerel on the fly from there which was great! cheers, good luck at portrush

cheers cathal, im sure that you will recognise it being the west headland of Rathlin Island - with the upside-down lighthouse. the headland was glowing red (and the light from the lighthouse was/is red...) in the evening sun. was pretty cool

I thought Rathlin west end then thought Giants Causeway, but thats away to the west of where you were. I got confused but at the end I thought it was the mainland up at Carrickarede or something.

It must have looked amazing at the time. I dont recall theb red light from the lighthouse? Was it the sun doing it?

it was/is not the sun - the light is red!
