Fennel's Bay / Myrtleville, 24/03/10: Little Pollocks

#1 Post by Ronnach »

People: me

Duration: 17:30 - 19:30

Tide: High at 20.30

Weather: Light easterly breeze, clear, bit cool

Bait: Toby lures

Results: 3 pollock

Headed to a local beach / rocky spot to see if I could get off the mark for 2011 on my 3rd outing (I had 2 recent blanks :( ). It was a lovely warm day, but was starting to cool with the easterly breeze picking up when I arrived, there was also a nice bit of a chop on the water. Bass at this mark for this time of the year would probably have been optimistic but I was going to be happy if anything hit my lures.

Shortly after my first few casts I saw the seatrout were starting to taunt me, hopping out of the water directly in front of me. I would love to catch a sea-trout at some point as have never caught this species before, and figured I was in with a chance with a small silver/blue Toby lure, but had no interest from them. BTW - can anyone suggest what kind of action to put into a lure to entice a sea-trout - I tried fishing off close to the top, letting it sink, slow retrieve, fast retrieve with twitches, etc.. but to no avail.

Just around sunset at 18.45 I finally started to get some action when I felt a small tugging on the line, but lost the fish on the retrieve. On the next cast I had another take and was delighted to land my first fish of the year - a little pollock. I had 2 more wee pollock in the following 15 minutes as they started to feed.

Not the most exciting catch but was delighted to get off the mark all the same.

nice one man good to see the lure starting to work :D
that was a brave fish taking a lure nearly as big as him
Give a man a fire he will be warm for a night,
Set him on fire and he will be warm for the rest of his life.

hehe I know he's a small fella to hit a toby that size, pollock are great though they don't seem too bothered what size the lure is and even the small ones are agressive
