Mullet activity 2011
Just wondering would anyone be interested in posting any sightings of mullet so any enthusiasts might have an idea of when they're really starting to show. I'll be keeping an eye out from now on so i'll post if there's any response to this. Not looking for particular marks unless the angler wishes to share. Just if you were driving down a coast road, passing an estuary, walking by a river, having a cast off a pier/quay wall/break water and you spot a few mullet that you might wish to share. Maybe if you had a good look you might know and share if they were passing by, or feeding and size of shoal. Let me know if ye think this is a good idea and i'll ask a few mates to keep their eyes open too.
Tight Lines,
Evan

Re: Mullet activity 2011
They outnumber bass in most of the East Cork beaches at the moment mostly about 2-5lbs. Maybe 3 mullet to every bass?

Re: Mullet activity 2011
Hi Evan, I saw a few broils on the surface inside cork harbour on one of the flat calm evenings we have had the last few days so I suspect they were mullet. I don't think there are many people who wouldn't be willing to share that info but I don't like posting names of locations out of habbit. Just trying to keep up good practice. I'll PM no problem with some cracking mullet locations. Have some in west Cork and inside the harbour. Let me know and i'll get back to you.
Species 2012:
Cod, Whiting, flounder, coalfish, bass, pollack, sea trout, poor cod, pouting, dogfish, sea scorpion, 3 bearded rockling, blonde ray, painted ray, turbot.

Re: Mullet activity 2011
No problem tomgrey. As i said, it's up to yourself if you want to post locations or not. I'd be very glad of that pm. But if you do spot the mullet on the move anywhere just pop a post up if they're feeding and general area, west cork, east cork, inner harbor and that kind of thing. Without giving away your secrets.tomgrey wrote:Hi Evan, I saw a few broils on the surface inside cork harbour on one of the flat calm evenings we have had the last few days so I suspect they were mullet. Mullet on the surface near the bridge going from fota island to great island on wednesday night. They're not settling into the pools on either side of the bridge yet though.

Re: Mullet activity 2011
They're starting to show in good numbers around crosshaven at the moment with a few small tight shoals showing up at low water. Not moving up the river towards carrigaline yet though. One of these nights i must get the gear together and go on the hunt.
No sign of them around the quays in cobh over the weekend, had a look in little island today too and no signs of them moving in there yet either.

Re: Mullet activity 2011
Went to crosshaven last night to try my luck. The mullet were there, not in great numbers, but we singled out a shoal of 5 good size fish and followed them around the jettys for 2 hours trying to get them to feed on bread but they were preoccupied with feeding on the weed fringes around the sides of the supports. We had baits so well placed in front of the shoal that they had to swim around them to get by. Absolutely no interest in the bread, so we ground baited a sheltered area with a whole sliced pan and we'll try again in a few days.

Thanks peakle. I haven't seen them up that far yet but i'll be keeping an eye on the top of the river by the park in carrigaline. Nice handy spot to target them there on high water.

Re: Mullet activity 2011
I've seen them just meters off the water line on garryvoe beach. To be honest there are so many spots and places (that I've seen) to get mullet and I've never seen anyone fishing for them, maybe they are not good spots even though there are lots of mullet there. I never really though of fishing for them but I might give it a shot any tips? Rigs, rods, best time to fish for them day night etc.

Re: Mullet activity 2011
I use a shimano alivio trout rod when fishing for them, a size 4000 mitchell blade spinning reel loaded with 8lb braid and a 6lb mono leader. I usually freeline bread if you can get away with that type of fishing in the area. Otherwise use a float, i prefer to use self cocking floats and a size 8 hook or smaller. And don't forget to strike, but not too hard and set the drag loose to let the fish run and don't bully them as they'll spit the hook. I find bread the best bait, also ground baiting will work well and is necessary sometimes. A tin of any old fish, or some mushy mackerel, mixed with breadcrumb and made into a doughy consistency by adding water, and just chuck a fist full of it into the swim every 10 mins till you see the mullet feeding on it. I always fish for them during the day. The marks i fish tend to throw up best results on warm calm days. This usually brings the fish up to feed the surface. I've put in a few hours already fishing for them but am yet to get a result. Alot of patience is needed but when you hook one you won't look back. Absolutely crackin scrap off them.spiral wrote:I've seen them just meters off the water line on garryvoe beach.
