West Cork Beach 21/03/2011

#1 Post by thescotsman »

People: me and Nik

Duration: 20:00-01:30

Tide: 18:10 or thereabouts

Weather: lovely, warm, cloudy, windless

Bait: fresh razor

Rigs: pullies and an abortive flapper

Results: few bass, few doggies, couple of cod and a 5b rockling

Report: With fresh razor to hand after our bait gathering session, we headed down to our 'local' fully expectant of some good fishing with the big tides. We might have been overly expectant as we were expecting fish on the first cast. It didn't happen, although I picked up a 5b rockling on my second cast.
After that the rod tips were twitching away as our baits were demolished by small fish nipping at them - better than the crabs from the week before though. We were fishing big so we managed to avoid catching them.
About an hour in the doggies appeared, first to Nik, then a couple in quick succession to me. Then Nik landed the first bass of the night - schoolie, followed by me losing a fish to a broken hook on a shop bought flapper rig as I hadn't any of my own - some rig making in order for me. Next cast I lost another fish close in as it slipped the hook.
Nik then landed another Bass, I had another doggie. Went a bit quieter then as the tide slackened off again. Baits were going missing again, but with no obvious bites and then Nik reeled in a crab to confirm our suspicions. Wasn't too bad though. Nik got into another bass before I had another doggie. Landed a couple of cod within a couple of casts at low tide.
The local fox then turned up, but fresh razor wasn't his thing so he headed off along the beach to some guys fishing further on.
Pleased with our haul and the way my new 525 handled(courtesy of Henry's tackle and my SAI vouchers from a couple of years back - fair play to him for honouring them!) we headed home.

Fair play on gettin a few fish. Petty about the lost fish. I was wondering where a local beach to carrigaline would be but i think the fox might have given it away  . If it is the beach i'm thinking of, that fox gave me the fright of my life a few times. If you were to say you arrived back to the car to find a hatchback parked close by bouncing away with fogged up windows i'd be sure it's the same place. We've disturbed a happy couple there on a few occasions.

I suspect you have the place, not exactly local to Carrigaline, just tends to be my default setting when I am going fishing. Having said that couple of beaches around have a fox on them, but the baitbandit on this one is the least shy of them - unlike the car based sex fiends.....

Nik was doing well with the bass.
I was out for a short while myself last night (8-11 pm) but there was practically no surf, althought it did improve slightly with a pick up in the breeze after 10.30 pm). I had a few small fish on a few lug left over from the weekend but they wouldn't touch my razor.
