Inishowen Beaches 18-3-11 and 19-3-11

#1 Post by Sweetwrasse »

People:18/3- Myself and Tommy, 19/3- Myself and Ciaran.

Duration:Culdaff beach 18/3;19.15-10.15, Lenan and Tullagh 19/3; 09.00-14.30

Tide:Culdaff, dropping. Lenan, dropping. Tullagh, rising.

Weather:18/3- calm and mild. 19/3- sunny, moderate south-westerlies

Bait:Mackeral, squid and black lug

Rigs:2 and 3-hook flappers.

Results:Coalfish, flounder and turbot.

Report:18/3- Culdaff beach

Up home for a few days, so decided to see if there were any fish to be had on the beaches. Hit Culdaff just before dark to get set up, fishing two rods. First cast, coalie!! No surprise for this particular mark, I settled in for a coaliefest. Was hoping to get a few flounder too but none showing. After the first hour my brother Tommy joined me for his first ever cast. I plonked out a nice juicy 2-hook flapper just to show him how it was done and about 30 seconds later there was a good bang on the rod tip. Probably a double or treble of our coalie friends I thought, so told Tommy to reel it in. 'There's a lot of resistance on it', 'Yeah that's normal, just lift the rod to break the grips on the lead', 'Still a lot of resistance', 'Quit whingeing, almost there.................wait a minute, it's a big flounder!!!' Got out the measure, 41 cm flounder the first time he ever reeled in a rod   I was gobsmacked!! I've hunted for that elusive 40+ cm flounder for the last year and my best is 38 cm, jammy git!! Anyway, quick pic and off she went. Looked like a fish just returning from spawning as she had a empty, hollow belly, which you can just about make out from the photo. Fished on for another hour after this to see if the flounder were going to come on the feed and maybe nab myself a biggie but just got a few more coalies in the mid-twenties. Still a nice evening to be out and happy about Tommys great start to his fishing career :D

19/3- Lenan and Tullagh beaches.

Arrived at Lenan at 08.45 and met up with Ciaran. Low water was to be at 11.40 so we had a few hours. Started well with Ciaran off the mark with a small Turbot. I followed up with a small Turbo again and a small flounder. The fishing never really picked up as it got to low water so we decided to move to Tullagh for a while. The tide was just on the turn as we got there and we were picking up a few small tubot. I had a flounder to about 25 cm about an hour into the rise. At this stage the hunger and the thoughts of watching rugby for the evening were kicking in so deciced to head home. Slow enough going but good to pick up a few fish in daylight. Few pics below.
