local beach, galway 15 march

#1 Post by corbyeire »

People: me and rolly

Duration: 6 hours

Tide: over low and then back up

Weather: clear night - beautiful

Bait: lug, rag, white, squid, mac, sandeel

Rigs: 3 hook flapper, 2 hook clipped

Results: 1 flounder

Report: after being out on this beach last monday with 4 others and 3 flounders were caught 41 and 35 by a novice and 25  by me and also a coalie - first time i saw one on this beach, i thought it was time to try it again

i got my tides all wrong and was there just on reaching low water - it was stagnant for 2 hours and only then began to push back in

the crabs started to take an interest and after another 1.5hrs my mate had enough of this

i was trying to use up all the bait after the weekend comp so i was doing some funny rig combinations - like 6 rag on 2 3 hook flappers which i had just casted out

i then noticed a car about 500 yards away parked beside mine in the very desolate car park of this beach - then i saw 2 boys out with torches - at this point i start moving towards the car

as it turns out it was the guards - they had seen the car there and empty for almost 6 hours and went to inspect it - i had left the door open - they thought someone was gone for a permanent walk into the drink :!:

luckily i got to them before they were going to ring the old man (00.30am and borrowed from him!!!)

got a telling off and figured time to go - went back to find a 40cm flounder on and in good condition - not spent from spawning - happy days and off home with me!

more to add to the story!

walked the dog down there last night and i had lost a rig tuesday night - but knowing the beach well - i knew there was only 3 clumps of weed it could have been!

anyways saw the 3 headlights on the way down - people fishing!

picked up the rig as expected

it was mick+son, and shane fishing

the 2 men only started sea fishing a few weeks ago, maybe 4 or 5 sessions done - shane had 2 flounder when i got talking to them right on the LW

mike was commentating on how well i had done on getting me rig back but that was nothing compared to what happened next - shane says he has another on - went over for a look - a lump of flounder - was the length of his tackle box - must have been 50cm or there abouts

it was nearly hollow on one side from spawning and even at that there was a bit of weight to him - if he was caught in oct/nov he would be 2.5lb easy

what a fish!

didnt have a measure with him but hopefully ill find out or he posts the pick up here
