East cork surf beach 28th Feb 2011

#1 Post by tomgrey »

People: Me and fishy1987

Duration: 6ish til 10ish

Tide: low at 7.30 I think

Weather: calm and cold when dark

Bait: Soft crab, Razor and Mack

Rigs: Pennel pulleys and 2 hook flappers

Results: Me:2 Cod, Fishy: Blank

Report: Decided to try an east cork beach over low water and first 2hrs coming in. It was bright when we got there and apart from a guy taking photos of rocks and sunsets we were the only people on the beach. Over the first 2 or 3 hours we hit a few snags which lost us both a bit a tackle  . After 4hrs without a bite we were cold and dissapointed and decided to call it a day  .

As fishy took his rod from the tripod and began to reel in he hit a snag. I began to reel in one of my rods which out out at medium distance but notice the other rod which was out further out getting very slight taps. I put down that rod and struck the other. It felt like there was a little extra weight on it alright and when I got it in to the surf at my feet it turned up a mediocre 37cm codling which was very welcome indeed :) .

After unhooking that fella I noticed fishy was still in the surf battling with the snag so I baited up again and threw it back out at distance. I picked up the other rod and finished getting it in. I quickly threw the last of my bait on. Fishy was on his way back and had snapped of again. I showed him the cod I had just landed and said I was going to have one more cast before we hit the road.

I was walking by the tripod to cast and noticed a nice knock on the rod at distance. I quickly cast that rod then put it down on the tripod and hit the other. It felt a bit nicer and even put up a bit of a fight. I was praying it would be my first 2011 Bass. It turned up a nicely marked 50cm cod which wasn't a bad consolation. Of course we had one more cast each but after 15 mins we decided to pack up this time. Still good to see some nice cod are still around :P

Thought i'd edit the post with a few more pics of the sunset since there were some comments

Cheer's red its a nice pic alright. Some of the other pics I took were even nicer but gave a bit too much away. I'll pm you one or two and sure i've been meaning to get back to you about getting out for a session.

Cheers, as I said in the post there was a fella there taking photos. I wasn't talking to him but fishy was, I think he said he was a semi pro and had won lots of comps and sells his stuff online. I'd say his pics of that sunset are class as he had all the proper gear. took his time too, a bit too long as he was right in the spot were we wanted to fish  I wonder if fishy got any of his details.... i'm sure he will fill us in if he reads this!

well did you get any of that photographers details? name? website etc? Anyway dont get disheartened with a few blanks. I've had as many over the last few beach sessions. Razor2 will verify the luck ive being having from the beaches... when you are envious of your fellow angler for hooking a specimem like this you know you are not doing so well.

Cheers, recognise the fine specimen above Ray? and on a big pennel razor bait too  i'll keep trying until I hook one of the silver fellas. Next session I'm gonna try have some juicy lug to accompany my razor and crab baits. Maybe that might swing it for me... who knows, as you said if they are there you should catch em.

Yeah it was a pity we had to leave when we did because just as the fish started showing up we had to split. I'm sure fishy would have saved a blank otherwise.
