local beach, galway, 22/feb

#1 Post by corbyeire »

People: me fein

Duration: 18.30-22.30

Tide: high at 20.00

Weather: heavy mist/ rain/ wind

Bait: lug/mac

Rigs: 3 hook flappers

Results: 3 flounder, 2 5 beard rockling

Report: after a very fruitless weekend fishing for ray i had some bait left over so went to a local spot - thinking the big tides might have mixed it up

got a rockling after an hour - the weed was a problem with the HT and a lot of it was moving from the piles left over the last few days

the rain got heavier and i was begining to wonder if the tide was ever going back out with the wind pushing hard but i got another rockling just as it began to drop to keep the interest up - said id give it another while

the tide started to move fairly quickly and i was thinking a couple of gullies might come into play - i was having my last 2 casts - one got a bit of weed on and i noticed that the the baits had been nibbled so i cheated  and stuck the same rod out again to the same spot

i could have swore both rods went at the same time despite the wind

1 had a double on it 24cm and 34cm - the bigger lad had totally different markings than this beach normally has - was very mottled in black and green and white - like he was hanging around an estuary rather than the brown sandy ones i get on this beach

unhooked those and at this stage the rig of the other rod was on an exposed bank - the flounder here had buried himself down about 5cm into the sand and was 27cm in length a very normal flounder for here

happy enough after more blanks recently in much farther flung place like connemara and clare

I had a small flounder on a surf beach last night and i found it was much darker than usual seen on the surf beaches too. Maybe it's the time of year and they're moving from the estuaries to open water again. Not sure but they definitely don't look like the average beach dwelling flattie. Nice one on gettin a few fish anyway. Good to have a mark close to home that fishes well too.
