Downhill Beach - sat 29th Jan

#1 Post by polmac »

People
me and a mate

Duration
2pm - 7pm

Tide
high at 4.30
Weather Calm

Bait
Rag, Mack

Rigs 2 hook flappers

Results
2 flounder

decided to try downhill beach again as the high tide was coming in a 4.30pm and the time suited myself and my mate. i had heard that the beach was fishing better in the dark but i was heading out on sat night i wasnt up for sitting on a cold beach instead! lol

picked up live bait from the outdoor sports place in Coleraine, great shop and the first time ive been in it and it wont be my last.

landed on beach about 2pm to get the tide coming in. we were using rag and mackreal. i also had squid, blueys and sand eels but i decided to keep this for another day. there was one ohter man there fishing and he had caught eff all on either of his rods. he had been there the night before and caught nothing either so this didnt inspire me with any confidence at all.

my mate stayed until half 4 and managed to catch a very small flounder. fecker i thought, as i was still on a blank and with a 4th in row looming i was starting to get drunk off.

i stayed another 2 hours and well i did beat the blank by landing a very small flounder. i was as actually over the moon at beating the blank i didnt care how small it was! lol i stayed untill 7 ish when i got bored and packed up and headed home. i was also speaking to four lads in a jeep who had been fishing benone and caught very little other than flounder so it seems the bass were avoiding us all that day. still good to beat the blank and get something for a chance.

didnt get a pic of my pathetic fish as i couldnt be arsed walking back to the car and i just put it back in again. lol.

alright mate . .at least you got out for a chuck. .the daylight fishing is slow alright but at this moment in time i'm finding the same scenario down the road so hang in there. but the night fishing isnt throwing up a while lot either, just small coalies and a few whiting and few rocklings. if you can get a chance the east coast fishes better this time of year

scratching techniques will help but its spawning time and fishing is slow anyway.

best bet - dig some fresh lug (pm on its way) and head east for a session.

in saying that i'm going to donegal this weekend - i had a monster ray this time last year and i wanna see if she is still sbout.

always good to beat the blank, tho them wee flatties dont register on my poker of a rod. . .(really gotta get a new one)
i wouldnt have thought there be many bass about this time of year. . . but i always keep me eyes open for a mention of them in the reports. . .

if anybody knows where the bass are hiding, please tell lol

Well done at least you saved the blank! To be honest I never have much luck fishing Downhill/Benone on a filling tide! Last 2 hours of the drop and first 2 of the fill does it for me! When I fished a couple of weeks ago on Downhill I went down to size 6 and 4 hooks and it got me fish!! Can't wait to get out now again!
