West Waterford / Youghal 29/01/11

#1 Post by Nite Owl »

People:Just me

Duration:3 marks about 7hrs

Tide:HW 3am Sunday

Weather:Slight NE wind, cold and calm

Bait:peeler, razor, lug, mussel

Rigs:3/0 penell pully, 2 hook flapper 1/0

Results:codling, coalies, 1 whiting

Report:Headed down South again on Saturday in search of a modest codling (40cm or over). Couldn't pass a beach in Waterford where I landed a bass a couple of weeks ago without having a few casts. Fished about an hour each side of LW with nothing for the first hour. Had a nice bite then and landed a 38cm codling (pb) :) so things were looking good as I was only punching in a couple of hours before going to Youghal for HW. Then there was a massive bite on the carp rod with the tip arching over to the sand, picked up the rod and was left standing with the rod in one hand and the reel in the other and a few metres of slack line at my feet :? The drag had stuck and the reel snapped where it was seated to the rod  The reel didn't owe me anything but was disappointed to lose a good fish.Had 3 coalies after that then the bites stopped so packed up and set off for Youghal.
Bites came hard and fast at the second mark with codling taking peeler and razor, and coalies taking whatever was thrown at them  Biggest codling was 32cm, but I dropped the best fish of the session after 3 good runs  Packed up after 2 hrs and headed for the opposite side of the bay.
Same story at the 3rd mark, codling and coalies to 32cm and lost another good fish by letting it bury itself in weed at the shelf 10yds out :x This wasn't to be my night so packed the gear for the last time at 4am and faced into the 3hr drive home.
All in all it was a great session with about 30 fish landed but it's hard to shake off the feeling that I left a couple of good fish down there (the East Cork/West Waterford boys will be happy with that) Thanks lads for all your help.
If this was a school report it would probably read:
' Nite owl could do much better if he only applied himself'.

Hard luck on the lost fish Nightowl, but congrats on the pb and you seemed to pick up a few decent marks on your travels

Cheers lads. Did a few calculations last night and taking into account the stretchiness of the line, the bendiness of the rod and the age of the reel the one that got away must have been at least 12lb 4oz :) :) :) and it was a carp rod I was using Roger.

Well done mate, great pity about the big fish and the reel, would have been nice to have seen it at least. You did OK with the rest and as someone said you got just enough to give you the strength to drive all the way home. It was well worth it in the end, but you must have been cream crackered when you got home.
