Youghal 21/1/2011

#1 Post by dac69696969 »

Location: Youghal

Duration: 18.30-around midnight at 1st mark and 00.45-06.30 at 2nd mark

People: Myself,mickm and ginger

Tide: Hw 18.30

Weather: Heavy ground frost, but not much wind.Calm sea :(

Baits: Fresh lug, frozen razor,mussel,peeler,squid

Rigs: Loads. Mainly pennel pulley rigs and 3 hook flappers

Results :34 codling to 57 cm and 1 coalie 8)

Report: Arrived at the first mark with the highest of hopes, a bit later than planned, and collectd some frozen peeler, THANKS JOHN :P ,and got chatting to some lads who had been there for a while already but hadn't great results....a few small enough codling in close to shore. We decided to stay put for a while anyway and we put out a selection of baits.Nothing much happened for a couple of hours as the tide began to ebb and things weren't looking too great as the locals, one by one , packed up and headed off. We didn't say it out loud to each other but Im sure the lads were wondering whether or not we had missed the fish at that mark. After 2 and 1/2 hours with the best of bait, all we had to show was 1 coalie and I think it was 3 or 4 codling in the early 30 cms.Mick put out a pennel pulley with a full razor bait....which I did as well and after a short while, and after a timid enough bite he reeled in a 50 cm codling...a pb for him. That was it....we attacked again with extra vigour only for mick ,without a word, to quietly stroll down to the waters edge about 20 mins later to retrieve a 57cm codling.....new pb. :o Well done mick! A fine fish!!! Things went pretty quiet after that for a couple of hours with only the odd codling to graham and mick and it was only with my last cast did i manage to save the blank with a codling of about 32cm. Phew !!! The coalie swallowed a lug but All codling takes were on razor with one falling to squid stuffed with lug. We packed up and headed to the second mark for low water and the rising tide

Nothing much happened for nearly an hour on the second mark with the first action being mick who reeled in a double of codling to 30 odd cm about 1.45 am.This mark we found seemed to fish on only lug with crab missing out everytime, typical -we had loads of it! We all got in on the fish this time and had a very enjoyable session for about 5 hours with all 3 of us pulling in fish almost in turn (although mick did keep to form and landed more than either of us with the best being 48cm).I got my best codling here of 35cm but he had a good fat belly on him :D All in all it was a good session and we were happy with overall fishing, although myself and ginger would have loved to hook into a similiar size fish as micks larger two, but sure who wouldnt
Overall results (roughly)
Myself:7 codling to 35cm
Ginger:9 codling to 34 cm and 1 coalie
Mickm: 18 codling to 57cm

Finally made it to youghal to get a few codling and recieved great info on the area from site members , cheers lads ,thanks very much.A return trip might be on the cards VERY soon  albeit maybe we mightn't tell mick

wish i could say it was because i just way better at fishing than the lads  but i think the truth is i using a long 16ft rod which allowed me to hoof the bait out a good bit further than the lads we were all using more or less same baits and rigs etc. but distance seemed to be a factor (or maybe i just am much better) just kidding dave

If anything I was the one using the bigger hooks and tried a few very large baits..........
I guess the only honest reply I can give to that question is that mick is just one of those people who always seem to connect when fishing.Thats mick for ya!!!

Thats right rockhunter me and dave got the same marks from about 4 or 5 lads, without the help it would have been a different story i reckon.
So thanks again to you all who helped us out.
