East Co. Cork Report 4/5 Jan

#1 Post by I Love Sea Fishing »

Well i decided for my birthday and Christmas present i would like a good old fashion fishing trip, after seeing various reports of lost of Cod coming from this area i decided this is where i would like to go!

4th Jan

Well arrived at the particular mark with bait in hand supplied from Waterford Angling and Outdoor (great shop), we got Lug and crab, first chuck got a small but welcome little pin whiting, went absolutly dead for ages, thought great all the way from tullamore for this! As darkness fell the fish soon came, with a rockling first to readily snatch my dads bait, after that it all kicked off, plenty of small undersize codling coming out, the biggest of that night was 2 and a half of the length of a Coke can, the nearest thing on the floor to guage it by, that was it for that night really.

5th Jan

Arrived back at the same mark with the same bait from the same shop haha, this time though there was a couple of lads down there from the site, you know who you are haha, great laugh, First cast on both rods, i hit 2 snags, bummer! Well fishing was even slower this time round, with the tide slightly lighter and the air fresher i expected better results, got one small rockling to start the party off again, hour or so later my dad gets a gentle pull, then a wicked slack liner, tea down, arse in gear, jumps up and strikes in, quite a good weight on the end, must be a cod he thought......Not to be! Up comes a Massive 2-2.5lb Flounder, like a dinner plate it was! Certainly suprised me anyway, fishing was still really slow, i got a little knock pulled it in with a nice little codling undersize so back it swam. After this still completly dead, getting bites however, mainly from the species known as crab fish haha, well now we had ran out of bait, so dad packs up, ive still got one rod out, then the lads next to us managed a Good sized Codling which was good, and very kindly of them they offered me some of there bait as they was packing up to, so i whack out for my last cast, tide really strong now, i manage to anchor down at distance.... 5 mins later Ping.. rod tip goes skyward, straight in pretty good fight and out comes a 3lbish Codling, Yipee trip not wasted!, i thought one more cant hurt, whack out again, same place, BANG in again, reeling as hard as my skinny little arms will allow, reel creaking like bitch, the fool that i am i stop reeling and pull, within seconds im snagged in the kelp, so a sweet sour situation as part of me cant help but wonder what was on the end. Either way i couldnt have done without the Dublin Lug gifted to me!
