Wexford 2/1/2011

#1 Post by Jayball10 »

People: Me and Skelly

Duration: 4.00pm to 11.30pm

Tide: High at 4.10pm

Weather: Mild with a very slight ENE

Bait: Fresh and frozen peeler, Frozen black lug, Mussel, Sand eels, Mack, Rags

Rigs: Pulley Pennels and 2 hook flappers

Results: Skelly: 2 Codling, Doggie, Coalie and a Bass Jay: 4 Coalies, 3 Codling and a Doggie

Report: After a series of disappointing results and blanks this winter we've decided to give up local fishing every week wasting money on bait and start venturing a bit further south every few weeks. Our first adventure proved that this is probably a good idea

With some talk about Cork I made a few calls and was given a mark or 2 from a good pal and top angler. We decided on a mark in Wexford as we could get some live peelers on the way.

Got down no bother, had a little stroll down to the beach and spoke to some lads who said they had a few. Always a good sign. So we headed back to the motor and got dolled up.

Fished the drop. Not intended, just the way it turned out due to us being lazy sods and not leaving earlier! The holiday boozin had takin its toll... So got setup just as the sun was setting and after a few casts the bites started. I was off first with a coalie on both rods. Soon after Skell pulled in a schoolie and words couldn't describe the look. His first Bass! Im still waiting on mine :( Not too worry. I'm in no hurry. I was after the Codling anyway . The fishing went quiet for an hour or so and then bang! Nice Codling for Skell, two small ones for meself. Some fish lost due to heavy rollers. Bites coming on every cast. One or two more Coalies and then the Dogs showed up. Love the big dogs down this way. My one curled up, closed his eyes and had a snooze by the looks of it. Didn't move from that position till I put him back in the water. After we called last cast I got a little knock on one of my rods, pulled in but missed it. Thought Id chance another little cheeky cast (do people do this when out fishin with mates?) so just chucked it out a few metres. A few minutes after, wallop! and struck into a nice Codling of about 50cm who came back for dinner... Anyone tried Guinness batter? Its good.

I think we'll be back down to this place again in a few weeks. Might try target a few flats or try some spinnin for that first Bass.

I know everyone's seen a load of coalies this winter but I put up all the pictures. I was thinkin that maybe one of them might be a Pollock as the lads that were fishing earlier said they got a Pollock. One of them the lower jaw protrudes and the tail isn't as forked. Perhaps someone could offer a few words of wisdom?

great report and pics man 8) we always put up pics of whatever we catch too as a lot of anglers who use the forums are just beginners and always welcome pics of the species available from our shores. not everyone is as experienced as some seasoned anglers who can tell the difference from a 30cm pollack, coalie or whiting at 40 paces  .. jaysus, i remember when we first started out and thought all th coalies, pollack and whiting were the same fish
