A massive thank you to the Surfers on Rossnowlagh yesterday.

#1 Post by petekd »

A huge thank you to the hordes of surfers on Rossnowlagh yesterday for the duration of the Donegal Bay SAC open. Well done lads, you managed to completely ruin the day for those of us on the first couple of pegs with your sheer ignorance. Signs had been put up for a week or two prior to this comp and you had the best half of the beach to play with but no, that wasn't good enough for you. Showing scant regard for anyone else you proceeded to destroy the fishing in that area with your continual brain dead half wit antics. Raising your hand to wave and acknowledge the fact there had been an incursion for the umpteenth time did not make it OK. Walking through a handful of pegs when you had been roared out of it after travelling way too far because you didnt have the balls to walk straight ashore and apologise like a man and face the people whose afternoon you ruined. I travelled up from the south coast to fish that comp, hoping to cover it and the area in Irish Angler, you lads single handedly ruined that. Well done. Even when I waded out to have a rant at you, what response did you have.....? "We have to share the sea" Dont make me laugh you selfish shower of ba ards. If I decided to spin up and down in front of you in a speed boat or something every time you managed to haul your fat arse onto your ironing board, whilst simulataneously flattening the sea for the next hour ruining your day, how would you like it? You wouldnt, you would be the first in the bleached haired hoody wearing, layabout queue to complain about the injustice of it all.

Manners cost nothing, you had ample warning of what was happening on the beach and even if you hadn't, are you blind? Share the sea?! I'd love to! I am mystified as to how you think your behaviour is OK? You selfish, selfish shower, a cracked off 6 oz grip lead would be too good for you.

Thats awful to hear. But did you actually expect anything less, can never understand why surfers always are drawn like magnets to areas where anglers have already set up despite bigger sets a few hundred yards away laziness i think along with a superior attitude come to mind.Never had a problem with sharing amenities like the sea with anyone as its there for everyones enjoyment but come on a bit of give and take would go along way.
Pete if you think thats bad you should try inch these evenings, some of the cowabunga lads down there are now surfing well into darkness which may be some sort of buzz for them but in my opinion its both dangerous and irresponsible. For what its worth in my youth i used be one of these lunatics except i used a stunt kayak and never did the lads i used surf the waves with behave so ignorantly towards others, differant times and differant generations, are there any schools or clubs for surfers up that way if there are a politely written letter from the angling body might get noticed, especially for comps etc,but more than likely evenmore dudes thinking they can surf would be on the beach the day of the fishing comp.Eitherway a letter to the local paper outlining what happened might be called for especially given the heads up notice 2 weeks in advance.

this happens regulary in west clare, even in places you would not expect, if i arrive to a beach and see the ironing board crew i will move away and give a wide bearth or if it is smaller beach i will walk away completely and go on to another mark. Yet this courtesy har never been shown to me had one guy launch right beside me one day and then move right over my gear and then had the nerve to tell me that he had as much right to use the sea as i did, which of course is true, but the exact spot that i was set up on !!!!

same happens down on lahinch regularly - the sea angling club puts up notices 2 weeks in advance - tells the local surf shop etc. etc.

then turn up on the saturday morning and as expected signs completely ignored - then the anglers move down to the other end of the beach - which eventually has more surfers following them down as the place gets packed

sure isint the whole country surfing - its only natural that they have more rights than anyone else using the beach - even if the other users were there first - if you believe any ad on the telly its the national pastime - with the incredibly cool surfers placed in everything from NAMA banks to unaffordable cars!

they really have a superiority complex from those ive encountered over the years - to the point where i just dont bother anymore - move on to another venue

completely the media darlings - effortless promotion continually - http://www.rte.ie/news/2010/1109/surfing.html

Most Sligo beach marks are stuffed with surfers and everyone of them think they have a divine right to surf across your lines. It drives me mental  . The new plague is kite surfers who cross the beach at such a speed that they can cut through your line. If I turn up at a mark and there is surfers there I move away from where they are surfing it an try to avoid an arguement, I only wish that most surfers would do the same.

Ya should of postponed the fishing comp and had a casting comp instead. First one to sink a surfer...

Yes its madness ive seen this happen in the master angler 2 or 3 years ago in sligo, 140 anglers fishing then the surfers arrived with no respect or regard for anyone but themself, could of turned nasty. They have a web site its a joke when you read about the saftey on beaches.

I had to laugh at the guy staring up in the sky when pete was screaming at him for the ten time to walk ashore instead of side ways through the lines. Maybe he though god was asking him for advice?

I think he was praying the angry man with the purple face, hopping from one foot to the other on the end peg, absolutely apoplectic with rage didnt get a hold of him.....

Seriously, you had to be there and see it to believe it. Even one of the instructors came up and started teaching his protege on my peg. Absolute disgrace. I will be posting a note on those sites alright but I need to calm a little further first!

We came across an incident recently where we had setup on particular part of a deserted beach, only to be plagued by surfers who arrived later. Most of them stayed surfing at the opposite end of the beach to us, but a few actually walked down to within a few yards of where we were fishing and started surfing right over our lines! Talk about dumb!

It wasn't a competition, so not as disruptive, but still a serious pain in the ass! Not the first time it's happened either! Have also had it happen with boats, canoes, you-name-it  .

I've dropped my thoughts onto the forum posted by jd, FWIW.

just been on and hit the Thanks button,

the list is endless from people not being courteous, swimmers, paddlers, kayaks jetski's and surfers etc etc, none of them seem to have respect for any other water sport, and when we show up with a fishing rod we usually try find a spot out of the way, only to have them take over the rest of the water, do they not realise the sea is a big place and it is possible to share it with out having to show off to the nearest person, writing to papers doesn't really help any, as I did a few years ago to the local paper warning swimmers and jet skiers the dangers of crossing the sea where someone is fishing, hooks leads etc.. the following week there was a reply basically stating I shouldn't be fishing there and go further out the coast or fish from a boat!!! and this was a place where there used to be a sign for shore fishing (which soon after disappeared)..

That was a great rant to read! Justified mind you. Never had much of a problem with surfers but once fishing the Grand Canal had about 20 guys learning to snorkel swim past me! Couldn’t believe it. To make matters worse one of them sucked in a load of water and started choking right in the old lads swim!

Alot of the surfers around Sligo & Donegal think they own the beaches, I was fishing a local beach mark during the summer & a group land down beside me & start swimming across the lines  so I moved to another part & sure enough another group came over at the same craic  I rember a guy teeling me he was fishing Strandhill & was told by a group of surfers that no fishing was aloud on that beach & to stay away
