Waterford Estuary

#1 Post by Century Man »

People:Me and Turbot-Charger

Duration:4hrs

Tide:Bottom til 4hrs up

Weather:Calm to gentle NW

Bait:Lug/Crab/squid

Rigs:Pulley Pennells

Results:9 Codling

Report:
Decided a week or so in advance to go and try a mark on the estuary........total greenhorns to the "opposite" side of the river I needed and got some some advice....and thanks for that ( you know who you are).

Arrrived at the mark at slack water and what lovely picturesque site.....absolutely stunning....November fishing for cod in t-shirts?????????????? How can you beat this?????

Anyway first baits in water lug and crab.......didnt think I was out far enough but turbot-charger had put one out far...........First cast he was into a good codling measuring about 48cm........I then had one codling not worth measuring..............We thought great this is the start of the "run".......Went quiet for bout an hour or more....then the tide REALLY began to rip in..............any decent cast was swept away at a 90 degree angle and the ground we were fishing was abrasing lines bigtime...( lost two traces in two casts).

I had been fishing 24lb line so after advice from a SAI member ( and snapping off twice) decided not to bother spooling up again.......so took out the slosh 20 loaded with 30lb straight through.............It was unfishable with the spring tide run so decided to "lob"one out shore side of the run...................In the water 2 minuts at most and BANG!!!!! nod nod then slack line............happy days........... beached another codling of 47cm
By now the tide had ripped in TOO close and even a 40 yard lob couldnt hold bottom....time to head for the hills ..literally................

There were also 3 guys fishing further down from us who we chatted to as they were leaving...dont think they had anything great.

All in all 3 good codling,,,,,plenty of smaller ones....and cant wait to return on a smaller tide.
