Cork congers 29-09-2010
People: Me and cormac
Weather: Calm dry and not too cold
Tide: HT 21.06
Time: 19.45 - 22.15
Rigs: 8/0 pulleys
Bait: Mack and Spuid
We landed at the mark just as it was getting fully dark and i got cormac set up first and got his bait in the water and got my own kit ready. I cast my own bait out and set my rod down and cormac was after snagging up and losing his rig and leader already so i started to fix his gear up. As soon as i started on his gear my own rod got a few good tugs so everything was dropped and i picked up my own rod and struck in. The fish lifted off the bottom cleanly and he wasn't happy about that. He ducked and dived and ran left and right and back down to the bottom. I held pressure on and managed to keep him up but he wasn't giving up too easy. I got him up to the surface for our first look off him and he was a biggun. At this point it was about 10 minutes into the scrap and i had an audience of passers by. I got the eel to my feet and grabbed the leader and it took me 4 tries to lift it up the couple of feet from the water. I landed him on the wall in from of me and tried to pull the rest of him in but he spat the hook and slipped back unharmed. Landed and released safely but i didn't get a chance to get a snap of him so the rig was rebaited and cast back out about 10 yards. 10 minutes later i got the same couple of tell tale nods on the rod and struck in again. a fish a cast so things were looking good. This fish fought well but i could tell he was smaller. After a fair bit of pulling and dragging i got him to the surface and lifted him for a quick pick and back he went. Nothing much for the rest of the night so we packed up around 10 and headed off for the grub. Strained muscles, and an injured thumb from the leader while trying to lift the first fish in. Only got a pick of the first fish in the water so you can't really make out the size but i'll pop it up anyway. It was the biggest fish i ever landed from that mark so i'll be back later in the week for round two of conger wrestling.

I know what ya mean. But then again if the big fish are around and you have your drop net handy, you still won't catch them. That's why i always pack my rod and reel too, just incase.grady wrote:thats a good idieevan699 wrote:I went straight into the tackle shop thismornin and bought a drop net so i'm goin back after the big chap on thursday.Hopefully he'll turn up for a few pictures.
