Bass fishing on a not so stormy beach - 14th September 2010

Report: After a good session on Monday night I decided to head to the same mark on Tuesday evening, but this time get there at dusk and fish the last couple of hours of the rising tide. However, when I arrived the surf was very weak compared to the previous night. That didn't look good, I would be fishing a weak surf on a slack tide on a beach which only fishes well for bass when there is a decent surf. I normally use pennel pulley rigs when bass fishing but as it didn't look too promising I set up one rod with a 1/0 two hook flapper baited with razor hoping for a flounder. The other rod had a 3/0 pennel pulley also baited with razor.

Shortly after setting up I was getting nibbles on the 3/0 pennel but nothing hooked. Then about 45 minutes later I noticed small knocks on the other rod. I picked it up and could feel something gently tugging on the bait. I let out some slack and let it run with the bait for a few seconds before striking. Right away I knew I was into a decent bass, it was putting up a strong fight, then surged in towards the shore, I rapidly reeled in the slack to keep the tension on the line and caught up with the fish about 20 m out. It was fighting ferociously as I got it into the shallows and I eventually landed a nice 57 cm bass Although from the fight it put up I was expecting a bigger fish.

That gave me encouragment, I wasn't really expecting to catch a bass at all given the weak surf. Close to high tide I had another bite, this time on the rod with the 3/0 pennel pulley. This wasn't putting up much of a struggle and turned out to be a small dogfish.
A little later I had another knock on the rod with the two hook flapper - a small codling. Looks like cod have become a year round species on the southcoast beaches this year.

There were a few more gentle knocks but no hook ups after that. I packed up as the tide began to ebb but very happy with the one bass.

about 3lb but hooked and lost a train and a few other good bites.....lovely spot

Well done Frank, the reports and fish just keep on coming. Another fine bass to add to your ever increasing tally. Your getting out on some sessions lately and your just right too, you have to make up for the time you lost when your foot was bad and you couldn't get out fishing. That all must seem so long ago now for you. Razorfish reigns surpreme and does the business for you again, nice one. I hope you have plenty in the freezer because at this rate of going your going to run out of them very soon and you'll have to go out and gather more. It just goes to show that you don't always need a big surf or alot of wave movement to catch bass, some people think you do and wouldn't try for them unless there is a big surf. I have caught them myself in conditions similar to what they where for you during your session.

I have a good stock of it - I got about 225 on the low tides last week, and still have most of the razor I collected last April - probably got over 300 then. So that should keep me going for a couple of months

It just goes to show that you don't always need a big surf or alot of wave movement to catch Bass, some people think you do and wouldn't try for them unless there is a big surf. I have caught them myself in conditions similar to what they where for you during your session.

There are some beaches down this way where I have caught bass when there was practically no surf, just ripples. However, the beach I was fishing on Monday and Tuesday night always seemed to need a good surf to bring the bass in. I have fished it quite a few times with a weak surf but this was the first time I have have a bass in such conditions.

i think those bass are following you frank . good to see you back out there at it again man between work, weddings and the flu i've hardly dipped a line since august . you must have been going stir crazy when you were laid up with the dodgey foot man
