various locations Mayo, Saturday 4th September 2010

#1 Post by kieran »

People: Myself and Bruce

Duration: 4 pm to 11 pm

Tide: down and back up 1 hour or so

Weather: super

Bait: lug, rag, mack

Rigs: everything, single hook zip slider for bass with 2/0 hook

Results: 1 conger eel (12 lbs), lots ballen wrasse (best 4 lbs), lots corkwing wrasse (best < 1lb), 2 pollack (1 lb), a pod of 4 dolpins .... AND A BASS

Report: Started off in old head watching pod of 4 dolphins playing with all the small boats, breaching completely out of the water and riding bow waves on speed boats and ribs. Took nice 4 lb ballen on 1st drop of float fished rag, followed by procession of corkwings and the odd decent ballen. Was feathering looking for mackerel, nothing doing. Added some mack for scent on slow retrieve but no good. Laid rod down to tackle a nice ballen and once that was done, picked up big rod. Very heavy. Estimated 10-12 lb conger had taken two of the baited mack feathers and proceeded to make s**t of the trace. Popped both hooks off but only after the reel seat (diecast) had snapped! Hate congers. Could not believe it came into 3 feet of water in broad daylight. Continued with small pollack also tackling float rig but no mackerel and no sign of triggers, now routinely reported around Mayo but not here as yet...

Moved to a small beach to fish from dusk on coming tide. Was targeting a bass, more in hope than expectation iwth a single lug on a single hook behind a 5 ox grip on a zip slider fished INSIDE the final breaker. Got a couple of small taps from flatties before finally picking up a nice plump 3 lber around 11 pm. Damn cold night, light offshore breeze, wasn't dressed for it so had to head home but delighted to find a bass in Mayo. Bruce took one shortly after I had to go, about same size... fish up to 7 lbs now reported intermittently from some locations...

Nice day out, delighted with the bass, forgotten what they look like!!!

Time spent fishing is never time wasted...

2015 targets - a triggerfish, a specimen bass, a three bearded rockling to complete the set and something big and toothy from certain north Mayo deep water marks

nice one on the bass

there seem to be a few more about recently, difficult to know if it is a case of more fish, more people targeting them, or just hearing about it more often?

but either way, nice catch,
