People: Me
Duration: 2pm-6pm
Tide: HW About 6
Weather: got sunburnt
Bait:mackerel
Rigs: float
Results: pollock, wrasse, colefish
Report: first of all this is blackhead in Antrim.
arrived down at 2pm, there was a guy there had been float fishing with mackerel the last few hours and got nothing. so i set up a float, cast out about 10 feet out from the rocks and within a minute had my first colefish. i love it when that happens, he looked a little bemused esp after a few more minutes when i got second fish. we compared notes and he was fishing 5 feet deep while i was fishing 12 feet, also suggested a smaller piece of bait as he was using a huge chuck of bait that the wee fish wouldn't be able to get in their mouth. he followed my advice and was soon catching himself. the fishing stayed good the whole day, and bites were constant. plenty of pollock and colefish and a few wrasse for good measure. the majority of the fish were under a pound. i did get one better pollock a shade under 2lb, considering having it for dinner but let it go again. there were a few other guys down spinning while i was there picking up the occasional colefish but not much else. only thing of interest to happen was i was playing a fishing when suddenly the rod bent double, i got all excited and instantly stood up and adopted my fish fighting stance, rod went light again but i could still feel the fish one and then just near the edge the rod bends over again and i can see a big shape in the water. got the fish to the surface and there was a bird attached to it (dont know what type). bird dropped the fish and the fish didnt even have a mark on it so was returned unharmed.
twas a good day to spend a sunny afternoon, then went home for some BLT's with red onion, mayo and a nice cuppa tea.

Good days fishing!
Would you always float fish from blackhead, was down a few weeks spinning and caught nothing for about 3 hours, then it was the long walk home!
Maybe just one of those days lol.
Well done tho!

Re: Blackhead lighthouse Thursday 2nd September 2010
float fishing would always be my prefered method on any rock mark that had deepish water just off the edge. ive only fished at blackhead a half dozen times myself and when spinning or fishing the bottom i usually get nothing or close to it but always have caught on the float. have fished there using both frozen mackerel and ragworm and both seemed to work equally as good
